Guest Sage Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 All of a sudden my down and right directions dont work on my E200.. Anyone had this problem? Is it possible its software related? should i reinstall the OS just in case? If someone has had this hardware fault how much roughly did it cost to fix? and can i fix it myself? Any help would be apprecaited
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 It's not really a user servicable part unless you want to try and find a broken E200 on ebay that you can rip apart. Button failure is known from tim to time and a Hardf reset does not normally fix the problem but you could try. As for a service center you can phone Orange for the company they use but the cost may well be in excess of £70
Guest Disco Stu Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 It's an inherent fault of the E200. You can send it back to Orange if you have Orange Care and get a replacement within hours, but I've given up and upgraded to a C500.
Guest Sage Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 goddamnit! i bought it in UK i live in Australia! its an inherent fault? you sure? so there is nothing i can do about it? iam about to reinstall the OS anyways.. fingers crossed.
Guest Disco Stu Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 Some people have been advised to take the phone into a shop that sells them and ask if they will take the cover off and clean the contacts. Of course you could do this yourself but you would void any warranties you might need to rely on. Orange told me that it was a known software problem, though they may well have been talking crap given that they've given the above advice to others. What about contacting HTC to see if they will repair it for you ?
Guest gvr Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 got the same kind of problem with mine. now and again i'll try to scroll through a menu and whenver i try down i'll end up using the right direction at the same time. admittedly this is after nearly a year of heavy use so cant really complain, should be glad that its lasted this long
Guest Sage Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 hmm.. i think it is a software fault cause after reflashing it i got the Right direction up and running again! so all i need is some prog that will ENTIRELY wipe the boot rom and all i might be ok.. i have just emailed Orange in UK asking them what i should do.. i also checked out HTC's website though they dont have any support options.. i would hate to have just wasted so much money..
Guest squall Posted September 30, 2004 Report Posted September 30, 2004 reflashing the rom does completely remove and load the latest update from scratch
Guest Sage Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 OMG IT IS A SOFTWARE PROBLEM!!!!! I JUST WENT INTO DIAG MODE IN THE BOOTLOADER AND MY DOWN BUTTON WORKS IN THERE THO WILL NOT WORK IN THE NORMAL PHONE AREA!!!! WTF!!!???? SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME HOW TO WIPE THIS BITCH PROPERLY TO GET MY DOWN BUTTON BACK!!!! Sorry for yelling :)
Guest squall Posted October 1, 2004 Report Posted October 1, 2004 maybe its a problem with the bootloader and how it allows other higher level applications, such as the os, interface with the hardware. If you have reflashed the rom then you have already releaded a fully fresh version of that, so i would look into reflashing the boot loader. Im not in a position to give advice on how to do this, awarner has experiance in this area.
Guest Sage Posted October 3, 2004 Report Posted October 3, 2004 iam hoping someone can help me iam getting desperate.. i have emailed Orange technical support 4 days ago and havent heard anything back yet.. the phone is pretty much unuseable without the down direction.. :)
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted October 3, 2004 Report Posted October 3, 2004 Reflashing the Bootloader will not help. It could be possible that you do have a key failure and you are getting a conflict. Updates will affect the bootloader to a degree but as you have the latest update I'm fairly sure the problem is not the update. As such i think it is a software fault cause after reflashing it i got the Right direction up and running again If the problem happened right after you initially installed the update a glitch may have occured during the install. One thing to try is a manual hard reset via the bootloader rather than AccessoriesClear storage option.
Guest Sage Posted October 3, 2004 Report Posted October 3, 2004 im on it.. fingers crossed thanks guys..
Guest Sage Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 no love.. took off battery for 5 minutes, took out memory card.. did hard reset from DIAG in bootloader.. no luck.. :) iam about to try taking out the watch battery..
Guest squall Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 Reflashing the Bootloader will not help. Im sorry to say I disagree. The OS does not handle low level interface with the hardware thats done by the bootloader. For the os to access the hardware it talks to the bootloader which then does the needed. If you find the keys work in the bootloader but dont work in the OS its likely that the interface between the OS and the bootloader is corrupt. You have reflashed which pretty much rules out a problem with the OS its self, but doesnt mean the bootloader is not corrupt. I would reflash the bootloader.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 The update also updates the bootloader so it has still been flashed and reflashed. I'm still confused about this bit posted earlier :? Is it now working or not? or has it become corrupt again? Otherwise I'd suggest you reflash the phone again with the latest update. If the problem returned when did it return and what had you installed upto that point? hmm.. i think it is a software fault cause after reflashing it i got the Right direction up and running again! Also as far as I'm aware you cannot flash just the bootloader on the E200 as you could with the SPV and E100 which I did many times to help with posting solutions for ppl.
Guest spudsy Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 Sorry mate i'v had 4 of these phones and every time the control stick has broken, all i can advise is to lay off the game's that helped my last one not brake for at least 2 month's :) . sorry i cant be of any more help dude.
Guest Sage Posted October 4, 2004 Report Posted October 4, 2004 spudsy: Read the posts.. its not broken it works perfectly in the Bootloader DIAG screen. Just doesnt work in normal phone operation. awarner: still not working. i tried reflashing to earlier updates 2.6.1.3 though it wont allow you to go backwards, i have reinstalled the latest update 3 times and the problem remains.. i got back the RIGHT direction once.. though i have never been able to get the DOWN direction back. I am considering flashing my phone with an O2 or I-Mate Update.. though it wont allow me to.. though i heard there is a firmware installer around that will allow it though i havent found it yet.. :) Squall: How do i reflash the bootloader? This sucks so much.. i have wasted soo many hours researching this.. its getting beyond the joke.. iam about to pull the whole phone apart and remove the watch battery as that is the only way i can think to force it to clear the corruption.. though i dont know how to open the phone.. it has no screws.. so iam assuming it just clips together..
Guest Sage Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 just an update.. have now tried 2.6.1.3, 2.7.1.1 & 2.7.5.1 ROMS and the problem remains.. so iam now 99% sure that only flashing the Bootloader will fix the problem.. though i dont know how to do this other than removing the watch battery.. any other advice would be welcome.
Guest hjh Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 i faced this problem 1 month ago, did try to reflash rom but doesn't help at all. My solution is to send my phone to service center, heard that they changed the parts inside, now it work perfectly. So it might be a hardware issue also.
Guest Sage Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 I wish it was that easy mate, tho i bought the phone in UK and live in Australia.. the phone is available here as a I-Mate and a Qtek though neither will repair even if i pay em.. pricks.. so iam stuck having to fix this myself.. iam about to call Orange in the UK for their recomendations.
Guest Will Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 Hi, i'll contribute some ideas here, none are 100% but hopefully one or 2 may help. on e200 there are 2 methods for hard resetting, and there have been reported issues when using only 1 of them, the bootloader reset, (as you have done) and also using start>accessories>clear storage. as they work in different ways (or so i believe) this software option may help solve the issue. Unfortunately i belive you have an intermittent hardware fault, as a corrupt bootloader is 99% going to prevent the unit even powering on. (this is from experience) if they work in the bootloader screen, it may be a fault only when the radio/mic/speaker/volumekey issue. (check for any stuck keys). removing the backup battery is probably not a good idea, it will not remove the bootloader and may cause further issues. - again this is a guess, but the bootloader is stored in non volatile memory.. let us know how you get on. Will
Guest Sage Posted October 5, 2004 Report Posted October 5, 2004 (sigh).. no luck.. much appreciate your input Will.. i just peformed the clear memory option in accessories.. and pressed every single button on the phone to make sure none were stuck.. every button except DOWN and RIGHT work perfectly. (Both these directions work fine in DIAG tho). I am about to give up.. (after a pull it apart of course).. Its a pity i needed to work nearly 2 weeks in Australia just to pay for this phone.. :) Though iam still going to pull the watch battery.. as it reminds me of a jumper for a BIOS in a PC.. Disconnect the watch battery and the BIOS returns to defaults. Though i dont know how to open the phone.. anyone know?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 Start at the bottom and gently prise the case apart using your nail or a blunt instrument to avoid making the phone. Work your way around both sides until you reach the top. Take your time and be careful.
Guest Sage Posted October 7, 2004 Report Posted October 7, 2004 HELL YEAH YOU LITTLE BITCH!!! I FIXED IT!! just called Orange UK and after endlessly trying to explain the problem to some chick.. she just gave me the number of HTC in UK.. and just as i was about to save the number in my phone someone called me and i lost the number.. so in frustration i pulled the phone apart.. disconnected the watch battery and put it back together and now it is ok! Thanks to all who tried to help me with this fault i LOVE you all!! :)
