Guest Paul [MVP] Posted December 21, 2002 Report Posted December 21, 2002 As posted at SmartPhony.org: "The first update for the SPV will be available in Switzerland on Monday December 23. When applying the update it is imperative that the SPV is connected to mains power. Before applying the update, you are advised to make a Backup via "Orange Backup" in order to avoid losing data." Interesting eh? I wonder if this is the previously mentioned Danish T9 update, or a bug fix release? I wonder if a UK update will become available at the same time? Watch this space! P
Guest chewie Posted December 21, 2002 Report Posted December 21, 2002 ^ why would it be imperative that it is connected to the mains?
Guest davidhorn Posted December 21, 2002 Report Posted December 21, 2002 When the ROM is updated the original ROM is deleted while a new one is written in. If the battery goes flat while this happens, the ROM is erased. You've turned your phone into a very expensive silver brick.
Guest kevlar Posted December 21, 2002 Report Posted December 21, 2002 I expect incase of power loss, like updating the bios on your pc, you don't want your battery to go in the middle of overwriting your OS!. Kevlar
Guest MBoden Posted December 21, 2002 Report Posted December 21, 2002 expensive brick ? not really , the SPV costs around 300£ ind denmark, the P800 is around 550£ Paul : The danish T9 was promised for mid-december, but we got shafted :-(
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted December 21, 2002 Report Posted December 21, 2002 You sound surprised? I expect then the Monday update IS the Danish T9 update, and therefore no use to use englanders :D Or maybe it is a T9 update and a bug fix? Will be interesting to note system s/w version before and after... P
Guest rcraswell Posted December 21, 2002 Report Posted December 21, 2002 Actually, the update program won't let you apply the ROM patch unless you are connected to power.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted December 21, 2002 Report Posted December 21, 2002 Cool... So do you know anything about Monday's update Ron? (or indeed any other planned releases)? P
Guest MBoden Posted December 21, 2002 Report Posted December 21, 2002 Paul: Yes actualy i'm surprised, one thing is when a rumoured (by Orange) update isnt out, but the danish mid-december T9 update has been promised from before the phone was in the shops. It's not just the T9 we're missing, our national characters æ ø and å is missing as well, so not only is writing SMS slow because we have to multiclick them, but national char's takes two keys (æ = ae, ø=oe and å=aa) dont get me wrong, i love my phone and i'm aware that there are worse problems with the phone, but they did promise
Guest rcraswell Posted December 21, 2002 Report Posted December 21, 2002 I do (I have the update in my hands right now :D), unfortunately, I can't say anything. Look to Orange for all announcements. Sorry. --ron
Guest Lojt Posted December 23, 2002 Report Posted December 23, 2002 Actually they promised the danish T9 on december 2... btw, there are no updates available today in denmark :D
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted December 23, 2002 Report Posted December 23, 2002 See the other post on this forum with someone else claiming they have the update... I can't find it! P
Guest SPVmad Posted December 23, 2002 Report Posted December 23, 2002 I successfully updated my SPV in Switzerland today. However many of my colleges are having problems (I work in Orange Switzerlands engineering dept.) The update process seems to hang up frequently. Once this occurs your stuck. Possibly doing a hard reset and trying the install process again will work. However none of my colleges will try this. On my mobile I have only noticed that the signal strenght display (bars) appear to have been recalibrated. Does anybody know what other bugs this update was supposed to have fixed? A
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted December 23, 2002 Report Posted December 23, 2002 No idea. Is there any way to download the update, and store it away somewhere, so UK people could apply it? I guess Orange would frown on this :D P
Guest tazmania Posted December 23, 2002 Report Posted December 23, 2002 After downloading, the update starts unpacking and installing right away, restarting the phone 3 times automatically. right now, i don't see a possibility to store the original download and distribute it. when using orange update again, i can't access the update anymore. maybe someone has a better idea?
Guest Arigato Posted December 23, 2002 Report Posted December 23, 2002 I was in the Orange shop in Lucerne yesterday and the staff told me, that the update won't fix many bugs. I noticed that the backlight doesn't turn on if you press any button. But before, while having you spv in the pocket, the light turned on, sometimes.
Guest rcraswell Posted December 24, 2002 Report Posted December 24, 2002 The update mechanism is a diff between your old ROM and the new one. Because of this, the Swiss update should not be applied to phones from other regions -- the ROMs are different. (I don't believe the update mechanism will even allow the process to continue, but I haven't actually tried that myself.) There will be an update for the other regions coming soon. ( --ron
Guest jmechan Posted December 24, 2002 Report Posted December 24, 2002 And in unsubstantiated rumour terms, do you happen to know what this possible future update might hypothetically contain....?
