Guest jharvey00 Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 Hi, I'm looking for suggestions from anyone for bluetooth applications. I'm writing a dissertation for my Master's in Comp Sci/Software Eng, but at the moment only have a working title - "Something with bluetooth". Essentially what i'm looking for are suggestions for software that involve bluetooth between either devices (running ANY OS) or between devices and desktops. My supervisor had an idea about making a database bridge between a bluetooth enabled phone and a desktop machine. Personally I don't see this as being very useful - most phones only have a 10m range so why not just get up look at the machine?! Anyway, if anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate some! Thanks, James
Guest jharvey00 Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 Any ideas, for anything involving bluetooth.....please?!
Guest londonlad Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 sorry this is a bit of a weird one but you could make a program that allows you to show the screen of your mobile phone as a webcam so that it can be used as a bluetooth webcam
Guest SMYKUL Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 Some kind of emulator with bluetooth multiplayer wouldn't go amiss.

Thanks for suggestions - keep 'em coming guys! :)
Guest rikwebb Posted October 6, 2004 Report Posted October 6, 2004 I would imagine that will be quite difficult to do, because of the amount of data involved. Try doing a 30 sec video, check the size ! What about a Bluetooth chat application ? Bluetooth remote control for PC. Play, pause, skip, volume ? Just as a sideline, an application that tells you what BT Profile other devices are using on your phone would be usefull. Hope this helps Rik

Hope this helps Rik BT has a transfer throughput of around 1Mbit/s so dumping video may technically still be possible. Bluetooth chat apps are interesting, especially as they could be implemented with GPRS. For example, phone can have a mixed contact list of BT contacts and net contacts. If the phone is within range of the BT contact, it will use BT otherwise will roll-back to using GPRS. Oh, just a quick aside to say that controlling the PC in terms of media playback has already been implemented in Media Remote 2004.
Guest nedge2k Posted October 7, 2004 Report Posted October 7, 2004 PC based proximity app. When phone is in range, activesync connection is established :)
Guest nossac Posted October 7, 2004 Report Posted October 7, 2004 How about a media player interface that plays mp3's etc through bluetooth headsets?
Guest crafty Posted October 7, 2004 Report Posted October 7, 2004 I second Nedge's suggestion, would be awsome for your phone to sync up with your PC as soon as you walk in the house - as long as the app doesn't kill your battery always looking for other devices!
Guest mavisdavis Posted October 7, 2004 Report Posted October 7, 2004 photo viewer for the tv dongle you can buy. and print via bluetooth would also be a good one.Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest chucky.egg Posted October 7, 2004 Report Posted October 7, 2004 How about something that detects other phones and (depending on the phones mood) sends funny or stroppy messages. Something like a Tamagotchi (spelling?) that want's to get out and meet people, if you see what I mean. Maybe after 10pm it could get "drunk" and keep saying "I lov you, I do. No really, I do, you're great you are". And it could pick fights over nothing at all. Maybe it could generate "SMS puke" if it's had too much, and keep sending out messages to itself/yourself
Guest AngelOfRage Posted October 7, 2004 Report Posted October 7, 2004 Ideally a Bluetooth remote for Winamp. that would be sooo usefull. they do one for the Series 60 phones but they have no plans for a MS one :)
Guest nedge2k Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 I second Nedge's suggestion, would be awsome for your phone to sync up with your PC as soon as you walk in the house - as long as the app doesn't kill your battery always looking for other devices! I was thinking more along the lines of the PC looking for the phone, not phone looking for PC or yeh it would kill the batt :) @AngelOfRage Summin like THIS you mean
Guest Sage Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 how about a Bluetooth Pong game between phones? sounds simple enough
Guest jackofall Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 How about an application that lets you surf the net through bluetooth acess points by faking a BT profile the phone doesnt have I think its the PPP profile?
Guest Hainsey Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 a bluetooth chat program would be good for bluejacking Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 A really useful program would be to send contacts through Bluetooth. Select the contact(s) from a list and then hit send, select the bluetooth device and the program would send each contact one by one as a VCF.
Guest londonlad Posted October 8, 2004 Report Posted October 8, 2004 I actually had that same idea about 30minutes ago - gonna look into it though cos I think it would be quite an interesting idea. Thanks for suggestions - keep 'em coming guys! ^_^ :D :P if you do this one, it might be best if it shows the phone screen at that specific time, homescreen if on the homescreen and video recorder if on the video recorder. that way someone can select the camera app, and it'll display the viewfinder (frame rate is pretty good), which would be the webcam. that'll mean the app would work with any cam app on the phone, that is, it wouldnt matter if its IA Camera like on the e200 or whatever cam app moto uses. Compatible with future phones too. so basically, 1. is to display the screen output on the PC 2. is to make it useable with MSN 3. (if those two arent enough  ) be able to zoom in/out, pan etc. im gonna have to do somethin similar soon enough, still got a couple of years thou.
Guest nedge2k Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 A really useful program would be to send contacts through Bluetooth. Select the contact(s) from a list and then hit send, select the bluetooth device and the program would send each contact one by one as a VCF. E200/C500 does this already. Just select beam contact and any discoverable devices in range will be shown.
Guest Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 E200/C500 does this already. Just select beam contact and any discoverable devices in range will be shown. You can only do one at a time. It would be great to have an app where you can select any number of contacts to send in one go.
Guest FonZi Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 Does someone know if there exist a program for controlling WinAmp over bluetooth ?! I now there does for Ericsson .. Jeyo Remote but what about smartphone ? If not then that would be an idea ^_^
Guest jharvey00 Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 Thanks for everyone's ideas, they've all been really helpful! I came up with a short list of projects and presented them yesterday - BT webcam, BT chat, BT proximity security, BT PAN (personal area network), BT dating ( :!: ) and finally, BT DB connection..... BT chat was ruled out as someone else in the school is already doing the same project. BT proximity security is a good idea, and something I may develop in my own time, but at the moment its been better implemented using RFID. BT PAN is another really interesting one, but a lot of research is currently being done in this field, especially in the protocol area which would have been my focus. BT webcam is another really good idea, but....actually I can't remember why I'm not doing that one.... :?: Anyway, although I took the piss in the beginning, I am actually going to develop a BT bridge - however, not as a DBMS, but as a platform for developers. I realise this will probably disappoint most people who suggestions aren't being implemented, but it will actually give developers A LOT more functionality to integrate with existing systems. One application I have considered is to improve an already brilliant PVR system - MythTV (http://www.mythtv.org/) by adding a bluetooth module to enable your phone/PDA to control the EPG. Look at the site, you will understand....^_^ So......next thing is to give this project a name - thats where everyone else comes in...hehe. Anything. Anything is acceptable. Thanks again everyone for your help, if anyone wants to know more details about the projects I rejected so they can implement them, i'm more than willing to help. Cheers, James

Guest Djarid Posted October 11, 2004 Report Posted October 11, 2004 BT SMB file access (not OBEX) i.e. the ability to browse and access files on a windows file share and open them over BT. Preferably streaming large audio/video files. This would allow the use of PNAS© ^_^ Personal Network Attached Storage devices if any more are ever produced (Toshiba did a 5GB Bluetooth harddrive a couple of years ago...discontinued now :D ) Imagine the potential! An intelligent 40+Gb BT hardrive in your back pocket, available to all your BT devices.
