Guest FonZi Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 Hey ! Yes i've heard that you should be able to read Barcodes with your Smartphones IR port.. But i don't know wich program to use or if it really does exist... He told me that he saw a mobile that looked very much like the SPV E200 in a shop.. And i think it is possible but i would like to hear if you knew where to get that program or if it really exist ?! Thanks.. ^_^ BTW.. : If it dosn't exist could that not be an idea for a new program ?! Think it could be cool to have.. When the price isn't at a thing in the super market.. :D ~D
Guest Coolbox Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 I think that sounds a bit strange. Especially if you meen without eksternal equipment. As far as I know barcode readers are based on some reflecting patterns..but I don't know much about them. A normal IR port is not so sharp that it can relfect the pattern of a barcode..is it?? If it is possible it would be very cool hehe. If you find out that it is possible you can read the concept of barcodes her: http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/upc.htm
Guest olly_k Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 A barcode reader requires quite a bright source of light, usually has special optics, and while some work off a single sensor / IR detector, many use a ccd element of some sort. The IR port on phones certainly lacks the optical capability, so I couldn't see this working somehow  Oh, if it did work you would need software to decode the patterns of the b/code and what would this tell you??? Very very little!!!
Guest pisquee Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 There was some Smartphone software that was rumoured to be coming out, but it hasn't as of yet. It worked by using an image taken by the phones camera, and then checking in with the company's server over gprs to tell you about the product etc

Guest jharvey00 Posted October 9, 2004 Report Posted October 9, 2004 I also heard about this a few months ago as well, there is a posting on here somewhere about it!
Guest markhammill Posted October 10, 2004 Report Posted October 10, 2004 Here is a company that developed a camera version. www.scanzoom.com
Guest pisquee Posted October 10, 2004 Report Posted October 10, 2004 Shame they aint done Smartphone version for it yet though
Guest markhammill Posted October 10, 2004 Report Posted October 10, 2004 I'm sure they could make one quite quickly if they new there was a demand for the software. Maybe then we cound have smartphone barcode battlers 8)
Guest matt1991 Posted June 28, 2007 Report Posted June 28, 2007 Palm has this program that uses the phones camera to "scan" bar codes. Its really cool, does any one know if they have it for WM5? Here is the web site for the Palm os program. http://palmgear.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=s...p;prodid=105848
Guest conan_troutman Posted June 28, 2007 Report Posted June 28, 2007 there are no programs that scan BARCODES the cameras can be used to decode the new generation "barcodes" which are actually QRcodes (google it) however PPC do offer an added piece of hard ware that plugs into the sd card slot that has a peoper BARCODE reader on it. I am of course not including the palm operated one as that is not relevent to this forum unless those device run WM software which I don't think they do.
