Guest zippy172 Posted October 12, 2004 Report Posted October 12, 2004 Ok, all you savvy sys admins out there... I'm in the process of putting several of our users onto our Windows 2003 server... As things have been before the Windows server, every user on their computer has been set as an administrator of their computer (caused me all sorts of head aches in the past but being plain vanilla users on the DC from now on will help greatly with the introduction of GPO's too)... However, creating new domain user accounts for everyone I've started the rather painful task of connecting user computers to the DC which by virtue of naming their new domain account, the process creates a new local account on their box. Is there something like a user state migration tool whereby I can import their old user account settings into the newly created local domain user account :?: Obviously for any new machines I build here at work, the machines are initially setup on the DC from the word go, so no old settings to transfer over... Any help, kb pointers, utilities would be greatly appreciated 8)
Guest Taoski Posted October 12, 2004 Report Posted October 12, 2004 To assist in migrating over 40,000 users to one domain (from 20 odd) a util was written that generates a text file with the old domain accounts SID matching up with their new domain accounts SID. A util was then used so that when the users logged on with their new domain account it still pointed to their old local profile. The permissions had already been applied to the local profile folder and therefore all settings/documents/network connections etc were retained. It was all written with the help of an in house SQL server (to generate the text file with the domain account info) and a product called Fastlane Remote Migrator. See their website here. Works 99.5% of the time. 8) Good luck!
Guest Taoski Posted October 12, 2004 Report Posted October 12, 2004 Alternatively you could run a login script that copies across their files and settings from the old profile. But this would be a bit more hassle.
Guest zippy172 Posted October 12, 2004 Report Posted October 12, 2004 Hmm, can't say I'd be 100% confident trying to write a script to do it... I only have around 70 users to shoe horn on to the W2003 server... In a roundabout kinda way, to assure FAST compliance along the way, I might just trash the machines one by one (backing them up first of course) and reinstate the computer afresh, restore the data, way to go... At least I'll know *exactly* what apps are installed from legal licences too...
Guest Taoski Posted October 12, 2004 Report Posted October 12, 2004 Only 70! Wow.... you got it easy matey! A weeks work! lol...^_^
Guest zippy172 Posted October 12, 2004 Report Posted October 12, 2004 LOL.. something like that... I'd still rather not have to reload the machines in the first place, since it's a huge disruption to the workers involved...
