Guest pisquee Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 Once a drive is formatted and divided up, file system put on it etc, it never has all of its theoretical available space available. Is the same with hard discs and memory cards
Guest RazorD Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 Its the whole, 1mb = 1024 kb thing, trouble is, hardware manufacturers and memory manufacturers use 1mb = 1000kb.
Guest Confucious Posted October 13, 2004 Report Posted October 13, 2004 You have been given 2 possible answers. 512/1.024/1.024 = 488.281 (there are also 1024 Bytes in a Kb) so that could be where the 489 came from but someone in another thread said that memory cards use FAT32 file system and that needs space for the FAT (File Allocation Table - basically an index so it knows where the files are stored) so that could be the answer as well. Does anyone know which of these two answers is correct? Either way what you have is correct, the unformatted card will be 512Mb but the amount available will be less than that.
