Guest jonlad Posted October 17, 2004 Report Posted October 17, 2004 Hi, I'm using XP Home SP2 and an SPV E200 and failing miserably to be able to connect to activesync via bluetooth on a D-link DBT-120 dongle. I've got up to date widcomm drivers as well as the native bluetooth support in SP2. Activesync is version 3.7.1 XP assigns the virtual serial port of the PC in my case in the high teens, I've deleted unused devices to free up ports and re-installed activesync, widcomm and tried the native drivers but every time the port allocation is in double figures but activesync only recognises ports up to 9 and no further. I've also paired again, deleted old pairings and tried after re-booting pc / spv / both / neither with bluetooth set to off / on / discoverable. And to make it worse on an older PC it worked like a dream because it allocated port 6. I have full functionality by connecting via usb cable but by bluetooth I can only send files from SPV to PC via Smart Explorer. Activesync will not listen to the port assigned for virtual serial connection so never connects. (Allowing serial connection is selected in Activesync.) I cant find any way to re-assign the port set by XP to a low number so activesync can listen to it or a fix to allow activesync to accept port numbers above 9. Someone must have found a way around this problem, I cant be the only person using more than a couple of ports. Help anyone ? Thanks
Guest jonlad Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 ^_^ Ok I'm going to post the solution to my own question just in case anyone is in the same position, it appears there are loads of problems with activesync not connecting over bluetooth, this worked for me. Firstly, remove the Widcomm drivers and return to the native Xp driver, the Widcomms don't allow you to change the comm port allocation, the native does. Ensure activesync isn't running at this point. Then right click on your bluetooth icon to get the current settings for the ports in use, note the port numbers and whether they are incoming or outgoing. Then follow the instruction below to re-assign the port numbers to a low enough value for (pc) activesync to see an incoming connection. To reset your COM ports if you have added too many serial port devices or too many Serial Port profile devices, follow these steps: a. Click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc, and then click OK. b. Expand Ports, right-click the Standard Serial over Bluetooth link port for your outgoing connection, and then click Properties. c. Click Advanced on the Port Settings tab, click COM8 in the COM Port Number box, and then click OK. d. Right-click the Standard Serial over Bluetooth link port for your incoming connection, and then click Properties. e. Click Advanced on the Port Settings tab, click COM9 in the COM Port Number box, and then click OK. f. Quit Device Manager. g. Click Start, click Run, type wcesmgr.exe, and then click OK. h. On the File menu, click Connection Settings. i. In the Allow serial cable or infrared connection to this COM port box, click COM9, and then click OK. If you have more than one of each port in use and no other bluetooth devices re-assign all outgoing to 8 and all incoming to 9. When I did it I was warned about port sharing altering use of other devices, I shared anyway. Once the ports have been reassigned as above delete the original pairing of the SPV from activesync on the pc. Reset the pc, connect the SPV into the cradle and set up the new pairing as normal. Check in connection settings that serial cable connection is checked. Remove the SPV from the cradle, check SPV bluetooth is set to "ON" and not "Discoverable" then select activesync and connect via bluetooth, once connected all activesync functionality is available including pass-through internet to save those GPRS costs. Ha Ha a happy man again.
Guest monger Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 sorry to dig up old threads, this seems to be good use but unfortunately i cannot seem to assign any ports to my SPV. when using some pretty basic phones with bluetooth, it sets up like ports 20 and 21 (for example) but wont do so for my spv e200. it seems that there is nothing practical my spv can be used for via bluetooth. any thoughts anyone? im prolly doing something really dumb. Guest monger Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 when i manually add a COM port it says "The device you selected does not have a serial port service running"
Guest Confucious Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 when i manually add a COM port it says "The device you selected does not have a serial port service running" On the C500 under Configurations there is an option "BT SerialPortSetup", I dunno if ot's there on the E200 but if it is and you have added the COM port to BT on your PC you're getting there... good luck.
Guest monger Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 your a star. im onto it now. thanks very much  thats all i needed, a point in the right direction
Guest scottt Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 Anybody got a spare HAMMER cause thats the point I am at. I have tried all the methods I can find on modaco and other web sites and cant get it to work. Got the com ports set up and have tried changing them about . At present Bluetooth communication port com 7 (this one cant be changed) Standard Serial over bluetooth com 8 outgoing Standard Serial over bluetooth com 9 incoming I can connect with usb but when connecting with bluetooth activesync starts the green circle but then tells me the device is not a phone ? When I turn off the ports off on BT Serial port setup on the phone com port 8 disappears on activesync on the pc but when it is checked it comes back on the pc then the green circle spins then the error message. Now what help I want is do I smash the pc or the phone first ?  Ps it worked first time when I got the phone but after a hard reset no go.
Guest Confucious Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 I got to that point as well after installing SP2 - it worked fine up until then! After trying numerous combimnations here's what I THINK got mine working. In SP2 BT on PC add incoming and outgoing ports to the C500. On the C500 BT SerialPortSetup tick incoming and outgoing ports. The bit that I think I missed that finally got it going was..... Turn BT OFF on the C500 Reboot PC When PC has rebooted and loaded BT drivers THEN Turn BT ON on the phone Go to ActiveSync on phone and select "Connect via BT" Now it's all working again on my phone. HTH
Guest scottt Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 I have added the ports on sp2 bt (light blue icon in taskbar) with ports checked on phone activesync can see the port but if I turn off ports on the phone activesync cant see that port. when I go into active sync on pc and change port from 8 to say 1 nothing but when I change it back thats when the green circle starts spinning then error message If i click connect vie bluetooth on phone nothing happens if I click bluetooth setup activesync on phone I get the "please bond with other device wich supports serial port or active sync as your activesync partner" but I am bonded as I can send files to phone from pc. I have tried activesync setup without the devices bonded so I make a new bond this does help a little as connect vie bluetooth is now number 3 instead of 4 but still nothing happens when i try to connect but can still send files from pc to phone.
Guest Confucious Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 Like I say - don't mess with the ports just reboot the PC with BT OFF on the phone and it should work.
