Guest radiator Posted October 21, 2004 Report Posted October 21, 2004 First post (woohoo). I've been after a smartphone for a while now, but each phone I've looked at has had it's little faults... I've been looking into the i-mate SP3i, but read that it may have the same problems as the SP3 (aka C500), mainly GAPI issues and the multi-keypress problem. I was sooo annoyed with this, as I really want this phone, so I took the time to email i-mate and ask them about it. My original email read: Hi, I've been looking into buying a smartphone, and was wondering whether you could answer my questions regarding the SP3i phone? I've read that the original SP3 had some GAPI problems that meant a lot of the smartphone games couldn't be played - has this been resolved for the SP3i? Also, the SP3 had a multi-keypress issue - ie, if the joystick/directional keys were in use, no other key could be pressed (useless for gaming). I am told this is a hardware issue. Has this been resolved with the SP3i? thanks in advance, Matt Rigg ...and the reply I got today read: Dear Mr Rigg, Thank you very much for your email. I am happy that the answer to both your questions is "yes". The full screen GAPI issue is resolved in the SP3i, and newer SP3s will also support the games. The ROM will be available from www.clubimate.com for the SP3 once it is approved. The SP3i has a joystick driver to support multiple key presses. You should find that this again supports gaming requirements. I hope this helps, and please contact us again if you require any more information on the i-mate devices. Kind Regards, Neil McDonald i-mate(tm) from Carrier Devices So, unless Neil is telling porkies, the multi-keypress has been solved...woot! Just gotta wait till this phone's released, and the first reviews start showing up to find out whether it's actually true... I'm now wondering how the joystick works...if multi-keypresses are support by the joystick itself, maybe that will mean it'll be able to do diagonals?!
Guest yoos Posted October 22, 2004 Report Posted October 22, 2004 I really like imate. They seem to be very responsive with their customers. I currently have an imate voyager and will most likely get the imate SP3i. Thanks for the info!
Guest VapoTrini Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 Good news indeed. Thanks very much for sharing this info. Dying to get my hands on this phone.
Guest Pondrew Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 Very very good news, although strange that initial reports about T-Mobile's HTC Feeler based SDA suggested it suffered the multipress problem...
Guest radiator Posted October 23, 2004 Report Posted October 23, 2004 Very very good news, although strange that initial reports about T-Mobile's HTC Feeler based SDA suggested it suffered the multipress problem... That's the only thing that's causing doubt at the moment... The line in the email that got my attention was: "The SP3i has a joystick driver to support multiple key presses. You should find that this again supports gaming requirements." Which makes it sound more like a software issue rather than hardware... :?: ^_^ Guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens (although 'midnight' has just been in touch with me about a game he's/she's(?) developing that won't run on the C500 - he/she said they're gonna email i-mate and talk to them about the multi-keypress issue, so hopefully he/she will post here with info (sorry 'bout the he/she thing - I'm new here any don't know anyone!))
Guest Pigo Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 If this is true. than this means this Phone is a lot better and a lot prettier hmmm tough choice that'll be  Pigo
Guest radiator Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Only 3 days to go till it's available in the UK... ^_^ (was gonna post a link to a phone shop, but not sure on the forum rules RE competitors)
Guest PinkPig Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 A "joystick driver" can easily mean a hardware chip in the phone, rather than a software driver.
Guest radiator Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 A "joystick driver" can easily mean a hardware chip in the phone, rather than a software driver. Ooh, never thought of that! I just hope that; a) They've solved the multipress issue and ^_^ They're actually available be the end of the week (I have a spare wad of cash burning a hole in my pocket!)
Guest Prema999 Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 Hi @ all did anyone ask this guy if they fixed this keypress thing also for the SP3. Or does anyone know if the joystick driver is in the flashable rom at all? Best wishes Prema
