Guest markgamber Posted October 26, 2004 Report Posted October 26, 2004 Is there anything that can be done to speed this thing up like a text-only mode or something? Between here and HowardForums, it's not uncommon to spend 45 minutes to an hour just trying to mark a few forums as read. And no, it's not my connection. I think this site is actually faster on the phone through GPRS.
Guest zeta101 Posted October 26, 2004 Report Posted October 26, 2004 yup, click profile at top rght and select the board style to pobSmartPhone 2002, and it will format it like its on your phone. Not very pretty though.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted October 26, 2004 Report Posted October 26, 2004 What connection do you have? The server does struggle occasionally at peak times, but generally i find the site to be nice and nippy nowadays...
Guest markgamber Posted October 26, 2004 Report Posted October 26, 2004 Gotta cable connection here. It could be the routing but it's not the connection. I can refresh some fat bandwidth hog like msnbc.com or whatever several times before this one comes up even once. Sometimes it's pretty snappy but those times are relatively rare. I've never seen a routing problem last months, however, so that left the site server. FWIW, HowardForums is much worse but http://www.airfagev.com is quite snappy 99% of the time.
Guest markgamber Posted October 26, 2004 Report Posted October 26, 2004 Wow! Thanks zeta101, I don't care about pretty and that worked great! Gotta see if that works on the phone, too, so it works with the Opera browser.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted October 26, 2004 Report Posted October 26, 2004 Hmm strange, like you say though, it may be an ISP issues, have you tried a tractroute to try and try the bottleneck?
Guest markgamber Posted October 27, 2004 Report Posted October 27, 2004 I hadn't thought of running a traceroute but I did and, unfortunately, it's clean as a whistle between here and there: 1 8 ms 8 ms 8 ms 10.99.24.1 2 8 ms 8 ms 12 ms fe-2-8-rr01.lancaster.pa.pa04.comcast.net [68.87.45.173] 3 10 ms 9 ms 12 ms srp-8-1-ar01.lebanon.pa.pa04.comcast.net [68.87.45.1] 4 10 ms 10 ms 10 ms pos-7-0-cr01.harrisburg.pa.core.comcast.net [68.87.19.185] 5 26 ms 27 ms 27 ms 12.118.104.57 6 26 ms 27 ms 27 ms tbr2-p011801.cgcil.ip.att.net [12.123.6.62] 7 40 ms 35 ms 39 ms tbr2-cl7.sl9mo.ip.att.net [12.122.10.46] 8 51 ms 48 ms 48 ms tbr2-cl6.dlstx.ip.att.net [12.122.10.90] 9 50 ms 48 ms 46 ms gar1-p370.dlrtx.ip.att.net [12.123.196.97] 10 47 ms 48 ms 49 ms 12.119.136.18 11 49 ms 47 ms 49 ms car2-6-v2.dllstx2.theplanet.com [12.96.160.54] 12 48 ms 45 ms 47 ms 122.69-93-71.reverse.theplanet.com [69.93.71.122] I took the suggestion above and set it to "smartphone mode" and what a difference it made! That worked great with Opera on the phone, too.
Guest Confucious Posted October 27, 2004 Report Posted October 27, 2004 Sometimes this site hangs halfway through loading a page, I acan go to other sites and do many other things before the page finally loads - it does seem to be a oproblem with this site. It happened a couple of times this morning (sometimes a page refresh helps). I have 512Mb B/band and no problems on other sites.
Guest Taoski Posted October 27, 2004 Report Posted October 27, 2004 It would be nice to have a few more Board Styles to choose from though. There are plenty available via the phpBB website - and yes... i know they will need to be tweaked to suit... but a text / low graphics mode for the PC might be quite nice!
Guest mike-oh Posted October 27, 2004 Report Posted October 27, 2004 I'm inclined to agree. This is one of the sites that i visit the most and is unfortunately one of the slowest. I've 750k broadband (through NTL). It takes ten seconds to from when i click on forum till the page is loaded. It can often be longer.

Guest vluther Posted October 28, 2004 Report Posted October 28, 2004 there were/are some hardware issues with the setup right now.. I had the site down for about 3 hrs from 10:00PM EST -> 1:00AM EST, I am crossing my fingers and hoping the site won't come crashing down when all you brits wake up ^_^. not that it was earlier, it's just something it needs, because it does crawl during peak hours. For the people for whom the site is slow all the time, can you tell me which sections of the forum you visit the most ?
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted October 28, 2004 Report Posted October 28, 2004 It's super speedy for me now! P
Guest refnulf Posted October 28, 2004 Report Posted October 28, 2004 Wow I like this look. Very fast loading.
Guest vluther Posted October 28, 2004 Report Posted October 28, 2004 "]It's super speedy for me now! P hmmm I was hoping for super-duper ... lets see how it works when peak time hits.. what is peak time btw ? right now i'm seeing 106 people online ?..
Guest vluther Posted October 28, 2004 Report Posted October 28, 2004 I just noticed.. everyone may get email a bit late , with their topic reply notifications etc.. my fault..mail is flowing as normal as can be again. enjoy.  :?: :!:  8) ^_^ :D :P
Guest TigerNet Posted October 28, 2004 Report Posted October 28, 2004 ...I have also noticed the site can be slow at times...thought it was me!!! Cheers Nick
Guest jscotl Posted October 28, 2004 Report Posted October 28, 2004 I've just posted a reply and the site took 20secs to process. I'm not accessing the site daily, but when I do I cannot help thinking that "it's not particularly speedy :!: " My connection is 1MB & I have no issues with any other site I visit. But the sites content/purpose makes up for the lack of speed ^_^
Guest markgamber Posted October 28, 2004 Report Posted October 28, 2004 Even in smartphone mode it's taking close to, if not more than, a minute to go anywhere or do anything on the site right now. To answer the earlier question, I almost exclusively frequent the sections News, Main, Software - Apps, Software - Games, Customization discussion and homescreen downloads and the Mitac sections. Now and then I'll venture to a couple more but that's generally it. I tend to doubt it has anything to do with sigs on this site. That's more the domain of howardforums where people apparently think nothing of a couple megs of animated crap and lists of every phone and carrier they've ever seen, used or heard of since 1889. But that's why on this site I wonder about the speed while I don't even bother with howardforums anymore.
Guest Confucious Posted October 29, 2004 Report Posted October 29, 2004 The site seems Ok now (a LOT better than it was a couple of days ago) Thanks. I'll let you know if I have any more problems but it seems fine at the mo. ^_^
