Hello all,

I have a basic question for you.

When i want to share stuff i have over lan how can i set it up so user who want has to use a password to access my shared files through lan?

I have win xp pro, and i know it can be done, just dont know how.

Thanks

right click on the folder you want to share, and click on sharing - follow the instructions/options in there

That did not really provide an answer.

What i want is that when user try to connect to my computer through lan, they have to punch in a password in order to access my computer and thus my shared files.

I dont need to know how to share files, but how to password protect them from others than the ones i acknowledge to see.

Thanks

Your disk will need to be NTFS first and then you can create a local user account on your PC called Friend1 for example.

You then ammend the security on the files you want the person to have access to so that Friend1 has at least read access and only you have access.

Then create a share - which you can also restrict to only certain users too.

From his PC, he will then need to map a drive to your PC and enable the "Use a different username and password" option.

Then he will type in as follows:

Username: Friend1

password: xxxx (as you set).

Or if he goes Start > Run > and presses enter - it should prompt for the username and password to access.

This will then give him access - and deny everyone else.

Ah - crud.

Just realised that the XP PC would have to be in a "domain model" for you to be able to make individuals have permissions and others not.

Sorry.... my fault.

I just went through the sharing files option in the help files and.... well.... its pretty basic!

I'm not sure what you are after is available unless you both log onto a server..

The other person either gets access or he does'nt - and if he does - its either read only or full access...

What a load of ****!

I found out that you can turn off simplified file sharing under folder options.

However, i create the share -> add the "Friend1" user (for which i have created a limited password protected account) under permissions to have read access, and my self (admin) to have full access.

Then, after clicking okay, my buddy (from his computer on the network) then access my network places and can still open the shared folder directly, whithout any security.

Any ideas??

Erm... Does he have the same logon as you? or does he login as admin, with the same admin password as yours?

Isn't that what it's supposed to do. Password to login, then read only access to files.

Suppose you could try running a FTP services, that would password protect a assigned folder.

I tried setting up the new user account but what i dont understand is that even though i set the folder permissions only to have access through my computer and then the user name account which is password protected, people can still access the folder through regular file sharing.

If some can post a walkthruogh or link to one, that would be great. It is really doing my head in. Why does such a simple thing have to so complicated :x

Did you remove the "everyone" group?

Or might be down as "Users" too.

Basically you need to remove everything apart from SYSTEM, yourself and the user you want to have access.

Also... as Flubster says above - if the other people on the workgroup all log on as the same username - as Administrator with no password for example then it will allow access.

Just did a quick Google search and found this page which appears to have a pretty comprehensive overview of the whole process.
