Guest revolution.cx Posted October 28, 2004 Report Posted October 28, 2004 ActiveSync 3.7.1, XP SP2, Microsoft Bluetooth Adapter from their awful bluetooth desktop. Brand new SMT5600. XP installs dial-up networking (DUN) services for the SMT5600 Shouldn't it also install serial/virtual com support? I did add a virtual com port on the bluetooth control panel on XP. The farthest ActiveSync will get is to say that the device is unrecognized. Setup BT AS option on the Smartphone just says to please bond with a serial port profile. I've read as many of the AS/BT threads here as I can take. Any ideas?
Guest Confucious Posted October 28, 2004 Report Posted October 28, 2004 Try deleting your partnership and setting it up again from the phone. Failing that get rid of SP2 - it seems to cause more problems than it solves!
Guest Dr Who Posted October 28, 2004 Report Posted October 28, 2004 Ignore the message regarding bonding with a phone that supports yada yada yada. It is a reminder, not a warning that you aren't bonded! Go into async on the phone and click connect via BT.
Guest revolution.cx Posted October 28, 2004 Report Posted October 28, 2004 Thanks for the advice but I'm giving up - 4 hours is too much time to invest in something that should just work. Microsoft's continued neglect of the Smartphone platform is shining brightly here. It did finally start showing a serial port on the services section of the bluetooth device. I can't get rid of SP2 because it's the only thing providing bluetooth drivers for the Microsoft Bluetooth adapter. I should probably just get a new bluetooth adapter but that would probably mean I'd need a new keyboard (the MS Bluetooth Desktop is kind of a mess techincally). So it's USB for me. BTW: The ATT Wireless support site says that ActiveSync does not support bluetooth and you have to use USB or IR. They probably mean it doesn't support it natively but only through the serial kludge.
Guest HighBimminR6 Posted October 29, 2004 Report Posted October 29, 2004 Here is the guide that helped me get mine to work- http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=2643
Guest Confucious Posted October 29, 2004 Report Posted October 29, 2004 God, that looks hard. Glad I never had any problems. Hope you get yours sorted soon 'coz it's great when it works. BTW has anyone else noticed that options 3 and 4 on the Activesync menu sometimes switch? Sometimes I have to select 3 and somnetimes 4 to connect - it always works though. ^_^
Guest revolution.cx Posted October 29, 2004 Report Posted October 29, 2004 FYI: I decided to try again. Added and removed the phone from xp's bluetooth several times. XP eventually settled on one com port in and one com port out for the phone + a DUN entry. Previously it had done various mutations on these combos. ActiveSync will try to connect on COM3 and the green circle will spin. But it gives up and says that the device is not recognized. So I'm back to giving up.
Guest revolution.cx Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 Well I feel like an idiot because I still can't get it working. Tried with the C500 ROM and the AudioVox ROM. Read every walk through, troubleshooter and knowledge base article I could find. Spent hours. Bottom line is the bluetooth transceiver that comes with the Microsoft Bluetooth Desktop and using the bluetooth drivers in XP Service Pack 2 DOES NOT WORK with the C500/SMT5600. The farthest I can get is to have the activesync green spinning disk go for about 20 seconds after which it says the activesync cannot recognize the device.
Guest Confucious Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 It won't work if you are trying to connect fro the PC. The connection has to be initiated from the phone.
Guest revolution.cx Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 Thanks but I tried that. Many times. You don't seem to realize that this hardware combination was put on Earth to torment and torture me. Any sort of rational approach to a solution only feeds and encourages this demon-spawn. It won't work if you are trying to connect fro the PC. The connection has to be initiated from the phone.
Guest Confucious Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 I eventually got mine working after a LOT of frustration (you must reboot the PC with BT turned off on the ophone and only turn BT on on the phone after it has finished booting) and it worked like a dream. For a few days - then it stopped workling and has faied to work since. I think you are right but it's not just you it was sent to torment
Guest jleecong Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 I'm having the same problem! WinXP Pro SP2. I'm using the drivers that came with my dongle, as the Windows drivers detect nothing. I've had my phone 2 days and BT won't work properly. When I scan the device it says the only available services on the phone are Voice something and Dial-Up. No option for serial or network connection. While I can make a phone call and hear and talk threw the computer I can't transfer files or sync using BT. All functions worked with my Nokia 3650, and worked with my Ipaq 2215. While I don't know Windows Mobile 2003 SE well, I do know BT and configuration of other devices and something isn't right. Not sure if the age of my dongle (over a year old) is a problem with the phone (new).
Guest jleecong Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 ** UPDATE ** After more reading and some more playing around I finally got it working. First I uninstalled any BT software I had (reboot). Then i plugged in the dongle. Windows detected everything and loaded it's own drivers. I then configured a incoming COM port (COM4). Most everything I read said connect using your phone. This didn't work for me I did it 3 times. I would pair the devices try to sync it would do nothing, try to setup BT ActiveSync (complained about needing a COM port) no luck, changing config no luck (BT was missing as an option). Next I tried connecting from my desktop. This time not only did it find Dial-Up Networking, but it checked it by default. Next I went into Activesync on my phone and click 4 "Connect via BlueTooth". Instead of saying connecting for a second it said connecting and then connected. Don't forget that you should configure Activesync on your desktop to allow serial connection and in my example set the value to COM4. From a technical side I have no idea how the above works. My Nokia showed a serial connection as a service but I see no such service offered by my SMT5600. However the phone is using a serial connection to the computer. My only guess is it's programmed for a one-way connection?? My BT Dongle is made by Cambridge Silicon Radio. (Generic) Hope this help somebody!
Guest Confucious Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 Got mine working again  It had reinstalled the Incoming modem (Control Panel -> Phone and Modem)as Com 21 and wouldn't let me reasign it back to Com5. I deleted all the phones I had set up as modems (C500, moto A835,A925 and Nokia 7600) and reinstalled again, it set the incoming Modem to Com 9, Reseyt ActiveSync to Com 9 (If you select the outgoing modem port Activesync tries and fails to connect from the PC), rebooted with BT turned off on the phone. Turned BT back on and it connected no problem. I am now a happy bunny :D/
