Guest lacla_1966 Posted November 1, 2004 Report Posted November 1, 2004 My daughter has bought an unlocked Motorola MPx200 and has put her Genie (?) o2 SIM in (the 300 free texts 300 free WAP minutes) but we cannot get it to connect to the Internet. We have tried most of the settings on posted on this site (been trying since 4pm!!!) to no avail. Can anyone PLEASE help me out before I either pull my hair out or throw the phone out! Thanking you in advance (you will make me one happy mum ^_^ )
Guest martin Posted November 1, 2004 Report Posted November 1, 2004 Hi lacla_1966 You probably need the correct username and password for the Geniewap account. Try the following settings and see if you have any luck :D Any problems let us know what errors you get. 1) Start>Settings>Data Connections>Menu>Edit Connections Create Dialup connection (Menu-New) Description: O2 CSD WAP Connects to: The Internet Phone number: +447712927927 User name: geniewap Password: password Domain: blank Create GPRS connection (Menu-New) Description: O2 GPRS WAP Connects to: The Internet Access point: wap.o2.co.uk Username: geniewap Password: password Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0 Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0 I.P address: blank Create Proxy connection (Menu-New) Description: O2 WAP proxy Connects from: The Internet Connects to: WAP Network Proxy(name:port): 193.113.200.195:8080 Type: HTTP Username: Password: In the main data connections menu. Internet connection: O2 CSD WAP WAP connection: O2 GPRS WAP In Internet explorer, Menu-Options-Connections, Untick 'automatically detect settings' and make 'Select Network: WAP network'. You should hopefully now be able to connect to internet sites like www.google.com via GPRS ^_^ For MMS setup try the following Create GPRS connection (Menu-Add) Description: O2 MMS Connects to: MMS Network (or Work connection) Access point: wap.o2.co.uk Username: geniewap Password: password Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0 Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0 I.P address: blank Settings Accessories-MMS setup Description: O2 MMS I.P Address: 193.113.200.195 Port: 9201 MMSC Address: http://mmsc.mms.o2.co.uk:8002
Guest lacla_1966 Posted November 1, 2004 Report Posted November 1, 2004 Thanks Martin for the above....have put them in. do we just type www.google.co.uk or use http:// ?? Very sorry about this, no technophobe as you can probably guess. Trying but getting CONNECTION ERROR "Unable to connect. Verify you have network coverage and try again" but have a small black G in a white square next to battery life and the windows sign is "moving"!!! Am I heading in the right direction?
Guest martin Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Hmm, you shouldn't really get that error. Do you have the top centre G displayed on your phone ? If so, try deleting ALL existing dialup, proxy and GPRS connections and re-create only the O2 GPRS WAP and O2 proxy connection. Make sure internet explorer is set to WAP network. Then try and access http://mobile.o2.co.uk Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest lacla_1966 Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Yes G on centre of phone. How do I tell if it has enough "range" to go on the internet? (Daughter in bed!! Trying this on my own) Just guessing, but could it be that although it says O2 - UK, there are NO bars at the signal icon? If this is why, should I go back to the original settings you gave me and try when full range? Also what do you type for webpages http://www.blahblah.co.uk or http://blahblah.co.uk ??? I REALLY appreciate this help.
Guest martin Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Yes G on centre of phone. That's good because it means that GPRS is activated on you account and that you are attached to the network. The error 'unable to connect' is strange because it would have to be the GPRS connection data at fault i.e Access point name, username and password but if you have a geniewap account then entering wap.o2.co.uk+geniewap+password should be OK. I would definitely try deleting all the exisiting data connections and re-entering them just to make sure the registry is correct.
Guest lacla_1966 Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Mmmmmm Very Strange...... Although I typed in "password" in password box, I have 16 *'s. Looks like it has "repeated" itself!!!
Guest martin Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 How do I tell if it has enough "range" to go on the internet? (Daughter in bed!! Trying this on my own) You could test using the GSM data connection instead (bit slower then GPRS though). Create the dialup connection O2 CSD WAP. Set 'Internet connection: O2 CSD WAP' in data connections. Set Internet Explorer to 'Select Network: The Internet' This will use a GSM dialup as you data connection instead of GPRS (2 arrows will show next to your signal bar to indicate a dialup connection)
Guest martin Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Mmmmmm Very Strange...... Although I typed in "password" in password box, I have 16 *'s. Looks like it has "repeated" itself!!! Yep that's Ok - It's normal ^_^ Whatever you type in the password box will end up as 16 *'s
Guest martin Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 It's possible that the SIM might not be for a Genie account. If you still get 'unable to connect' then try the following instead for a standard O2 PAYG SIM. Access point: payandgo.o2.co.uk Username: payandgo Password: password
Guest lacla_1966 Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 Could it be because the signal strength is so weak (going between No signal sign (No Service) and no bars (O2 - UK))? The most we have had all night is 1 bar!!! Could weak signal cause this error? CONNECTION ERROR "Unable to connect. Verify you have network coverage and try again" I am ready for throwing myself out the window never mind the phone, but if you think it COULD be the signal strength (o2 weak where we stay, but can make/receive calls and SMS) I will try in the morning where there is a stronger signal.
Guest martin Posted November 2, 2004 Report Posted November 2, 2004 You should usually be able to initiate a connection even with a poor signal. Problems mostly occur when downloading pages. Still one bar is not very good for data calls ^_^ If you had another GPRS phone then it might be worth trying your SIM in it to confim if O2 have any GPRS network problems. Posted from my SmartPhone!
