Guest christophw Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 Nokia cell phones have this feature - depending on the provider they display in which state you are in, or even city. Is there such a feature in the C500 and did I simply miss it? Chris
Guest dynamo Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 I don't think any of the phones on Orange have had the Cell Info enabled, even on nokia phones. But please correct me if i'm wrong. It's either because orange don't want you to have it or the orange network don't broadcast it.
Guest christophw Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 I should have added that I have the SPV C500 Developer Edition and am not using it on Orange networks (my home network is Connect Austria (ONE) which does support cell info, also tested recently in Barcelona with AMENA) All recent Nokias have that feature, but it ships disabled (6210i to be specific which I still have as a secondary). Chris
Guest rct_uk Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 Hi, before I answer I just want to say how useful the site has been to me; I got my C500 a month ago (my first Smartphone) - I haven't been this impressed with a phone since I got my Siemens SL42e! (That really says something!) Back to the question... dynamo, your're right Orange don't use Cell broadcast in the UK, but christophw, you'll be pleased to know the feature is there: [start]>Settings>Phone>Channels Hope this helps

Guest christophw Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 Start - 4 - 1 - 6 gets me to Channels, alright. There I have [] Enable channels [] Receive channel list and Languages. Simply checking enable channels / done does nothing (actually going back into channels tells me it is unchecked again). Receive and enable makes the two stick, but still gives me no cell info. So basically I'm asking for the actual steps that made it work for you so I can check if it is provider-specific or some PEBKAC problem at my end. Chris
Guest rct_uk Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 Perhaps try Menu>Edit Channels (when in the channels screen) It works with the 2 options ticked for a friend of mine using Vodafone in UK, but I can't try it myself as I use Orange and T-Mobile.
Guest christophw Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 Here is what I did: 1) Checked both options, Language All 2) Done Went back into Channels. Pressed Menu, Edit Channels. None there. What did your friend see there? Did he do Menu / Add? If so, which other steps? Chris
Guest rct_uk Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 I'm not sure what he did, next.... Ill ask when I see him next. He has the local area code displayed on his phone depending on where he is so it seems the feature does work.
Guest Confucious Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 IIRC isn't cell info channel 200? It's a long time since channels were of any use in the UK but try adding channel 200 and see if that works.
Guest christophw Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 So the question is - is there a place where channels and their usage is documented? Chris
Guest markd66 Posted November 3, 2004 Report Posted November 3, 2004 To add a new channel: First of all, check that you have the cellbroadcast plugin in your homescreen. The Windows Default and Windows Simple homescreens do have it, the Orange one does not. This is how it's called: <plugin clsid="{4e822425-a00f-497c-80ff-1c554665a369} " name="cooltext" height="20"> <scrolltext textsource="cellbroadcast"/> <background> <format state="selected" bgcolor="COLOR_HOMEHIGHLIGHT"/> </background> </plugin> Then follow these steps (from memory, so E&OE ^_^ ): 1) Start -> Settings -> Phone -> Channels 2) Tick Enable Channels & Receive channel list (although the latter will do nothing in the UK). 3) Menu -> Edit Channels (might say Add until you have added one, can't remember) 4) Menu -> Add 5) Tick Enable Channel, give it a description and then provide the channel that your network uses for Cell Broadcast. In the UK it's 50 for Vodafone, I think o2 use channel 200 still.
Guest dambox Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 There is an app call "tinygps" that enables this and also allows it to be displayed on the home screen. http://mobilok.com/
Guest Confucious Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 5) Tick Enable Channel, give it a description and then provide the channel that your network uses for Cell Broadcast. In the UK it's 50 for Vodafone, I think o2 use channel 200 still. So my memory is not as bad as i thought! i was on BT Cellnet which is now O2 when I last looked at this. But this also means there can't be a list of channels as different providers are using diffrerent channels for the same info. So in answer to your question christophw it looks like you will have to contact your provider to see if a) they actually transmit the data and :D whayt channel it's on and c) what, if any, other channel info they transmit. HTH PS - Thanks for clarifying that markd66 - you actually sound like you know what you're talkinhg about ^_^
Guest christophw Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 Channel 50 did the trick, so this seems to be the standard channel for cell broadcasts. Chris
Guest Cyberdim Posted November 5, 2004 Report Posted November 5, 2004 There might be very easy way to do this... Read my previous post: http://smartphone.modaco.com/viewtopic.php...9332&highlight= It worked for some (not orange people though)...
