Guest shortcut3d Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 I have test flashed a HTC Typhoon (900/1800/1900) with a new triband 850/1800/1900 ROM. The flash worked successfully. The phone gets reception of voice and data on the Cingular-CA network. Can someone verify that the imate SP3 hardware is capable of running on the 850 band with the proper ROM? Does anyone have an idea how to tell which band I am using?
Guest gcherian Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 I do not believe that CA cingular network is 850 band - it is 1900 band and so you might want to test that some where else to make sure that the 850 band is indeed working. George
Guest shortcut3d Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 I know that Cingular-CA is mostly 1900, but after the ATTWS acquisition they are switching to 850 as the primary network in California. I just tried a ATTWS SIM and it connect immediately, I am not sure if ATTWS is roaming on Cingular 1900, but there is a good chance it is not.
Guest gcherian Posted November 4, 2004 Report Posted November 4, 2004 That is great news - what are gprs settings you use to get the data.

Guest shortcut3d Posted November 8, 2004 Report Posted November 8, 2004 Dear Sir, Thanks for writing in! However, the Radio should support the network bandwidth. This concerns the antenna and other hardware components. A ROM flash cannot make your device compatible to the 900/1800/1900 network. Feel free to contact me in case of any further queries/clarifications; I will be glad to assist you! Best regards, So flashing the C500 or SP3 or SMT5600 will not successfully change the bandwidth. The radio can support the flash, and I bet you will get limited reception on the switched band. I don't think this is a valid solution for US people to get 850 band. I guess I will be selling my SP3 and getting a SMT5600 or whatever HTC Cingular may offer on the 15th.
Guest nickcornaglia Posted November 8, 2004 Report Posted November 8, 2004 Cingular is ALL 850 in my area. (Philadelphia/South Jersey)> I can also conform that there is NO Cingular 1900 in this area. But the ATT merger should change that.
Guest jmorehouse Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 I just bought an AT&T SMT 5600. I am going to be using the phone with T-Mobile. Are my assumptions correct that this phone will support 850 and not 900 out of the box? If so, is there anyway I can flash it to work with the 900 band? I am guessing I could use the Orange ROM. Any advice or info is greatly appreciated.
Guest shortcut3d Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 Once you unlock the phone you can install any ROM. Some ROMs need to be installed via the "rainbow" screen when you start the installer. Other ROMs need to have the nk.nbf file captured and then use ROMUpdateUtility.exe from florin's unlock site. Florin provides an 850 and 900 version of the orange ROM. I tried the same with my imate to get 850 working. I cannot prove that 850 was work on my 900/1800/1900 phone. The reply from technical support said the radio will support both 850 and 900 but the remaining hardware does not. I am waiting from my SMT 5600 to get here. Then I will be able to confirm which band is working on my imate SP3 by comparing signal strength in a area know to get very poor 1900, but good 850. I tried this comparison using AT&T SIM and Cingular SIM, but 64K Cingular SIM on 1900 worked as well as the AT&T SIM with a flashed 850 ROM. Therefore, my results have been inconclusive.

Would I be right in assuming that t-mobile (after unlocking) would be a good provider go with (based purely on bands) as they predominantly use 900? thanks RikF

There isn't a single 900 MHz tower in the US and there never, ever will. 850 is all over the place now and you will need that. Now if you're not in the US, let's just pretend I didn't say anything. -Mc
Guest florin_m Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 UPDATES: Guys I got a bad news  Yesterday i received a AudioVOX from somebody for tests regarding the radio part. SEEMS that CAN'T make the AUDIOVOX to work with 900 MHZ whatsoever (I copyed FULL gsm tuning from a Orange C500 to it and still nothing). So is look like is a HARDWARE ISSUE. SO, by JUST FLASHING the RADIO and THE tunning, the phone it will not OPERATE on different frequencys :D

They would be the better choice for a C500 user. T-mobile also has cheaper data plans than Cingular, the biggest US carrier. From what I have read, T-mobile is locking down their data and jacking up prices. Cingular definitely has better coverage. Its your choice to make.
Guest aristoBrat Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 FWIW, although they appear to be tightening up their network (read: not all ports open on the $4.99/$9.99 t-zones plans) T-Mobile US' data prices haven't changed any.
