US Phones in the UK

I curently live in the US and have the US verison of the c500 w/ ATT and the t-mobile HP 6315. i am going to be living in London for much of the first half of 2005 and wanted to know if it would be possible if i get my phones unlocked they they would work with a PAYG carrier in the UK? i love my smartphone/PPCPE and would like to keep them and not buy new phones. Would there be any problme throwing a PAYG sim into the phone? or does the phone need special software to work on a PAYG provider?

Also, on a side note if any of you can chime in, in London how widespread are open WiFi AP's? since my 6315 has wifi i would perfer to use WiFi mostly for data (espicialy since i use Good Link for email) then PAYG GPRS. but that obviously depends upon how easy it is to find open APs.

You can get your c500 unlocked at www.imei-check.co.uk i believe. Not sure about the ipaq though.

A quick google for wifi APs should provide plenty of info on their locations in London.
