Guest egede Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 Hi, I have had some serious trouble getting an old SPV I've just got to work. I can't update Windows CE, can't connect, have an outdated bootloader etc. By now I've screewed up my phone quite a bit, I can't even load Win CE correct, what should I do? The only solution I can see, is if anyone would like to send ([email protected]) me a binary of a bootable image, created from their SPV in the bootloader menu, is their other ways to get past this problem?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 Welcome to the site  What have you actually been doing to the phone? Also the phone does not run Winows CE as such but a variant of. What version of the bootloader do you have and can you get to the canary screen? If so then you can run one of the Orange updates, this will also update your bootloader at the same time. Moved to Help and Advice
Guest egede Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 Thank you  As the model I got was a test model, the software full of bugs, and the Orange ROM updater wouldn't recognize my device as an SPV. I thought it might help upgrading the bootloader, and so I did, downloaded from http://www.airfagev.com/howto.htm . But afterwards, the phone wouldn't boot correct and The Canary Diag menu will only display "Erase IPSM"... But I can still get to the Canary screen, and I can still load bootloaders etc. from the SD-card.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 The instructions at airfagev are designed for users of the SMART roms. As long as you can get to the bootloader you can update the phone. Make sure you turn off any firwalls etc as that can cause problems. Also leave the phone connected to the PC in canary screen and rebot the PC, now run the update again.
Guest egede Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 The update software give me a connection error. ActiveSync can't find the phone either. I think it's because that Windows XP (and 2k) tries to install the hardware by itself... I have deactivated firewall and antivirus, and tried to restart the computer with the phone on and in craddle before installing. What should I do from here? And btw, what's the difference between my ROM and SMART ROM?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 In the Canary screen Activsync will not connect to the phone, this is normal. Without knowing exactly what rom you have it's a bit hard to say the difference is. Be carfull if you are trying to update with a SMART rom as they are the only roms that can re SIM lock a phone to the SMART network.
Guest egede Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 But when you use the updater from Orange, a connection to ActiveSync (more precise, som dll's from the program) is required, am I using the wrong software then? And is it a problem that the phone, when plugged in, is installed as an 'unknown device'?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 13, 2004 Report Posted November 13, 2004 When you use the Orange update you do not need a connection to Activsync. As I mention above Activsync is not used when the phone is on the canary screen. The Orange installer will sort out correct files etc. I presume you are using the latest update 1.6 from Orange?
Guest egede Posted November 13, 2004 Report Posted November 13, 2004 What I mean is that the ROM-updater use *.dll's from ActiveSync... Anyway, I'm using the 1.6 Danish (as I'm Danish) update, but it won't connect... Is it illegal to get a binary version of a backup from another SPV and download it to a SD card, and put it on my phone?
Guest Disco Stu Posted November 13, 2004 Report Posted November 13, 2004 I wouldn't have thought so. Just don't distribute it to others.
