USB to Battery Power

I've got myself a cradle that I'm going to mod to hold the C500 sync cable. But at the same time, the cradle takes 2 AAA batteries which are used to light an LED when the phone rings... A USB port gives out 5V with 500mA current apparently... One AAA battery is 1.5V, therefore 3V input in this case... Would it be possible to do a direct power link, or do you think the 5V would kill the LED?

I dont think that 5v would destroy the LED although it may burn out alot sooner than it normally would, as for doing a direct power link, well, it has been done before.

Thanks. It's what I was thinking (as they always say). In theory, it seems pretty easy to do - just snip the sync cable near the end and put 2 additional wires in.
