C500 keypad problem

I just got my nice new C500 today. Earlier on when I was using it the keypad lit up blue when I pressed any keys.... now its remaining dark any idea how to make it light up again. Also can anyone tell me how to turn the keypad sound off as I think Ill drive my colleagues mad texting and beeping.

Im sure the solutions are so simple I just cant see them

Is has a light sensor built in so it will lit up the keyboard only in the dark environment
