Guest neilfenstein Posted November 18, 2004 Report Posted November 18, 2004 I saw this in the paper www.onspeed.com they claim to have a compression software that improves dial up by 5x and GPRS by 8x! It apparently only works on pc's with dialup or gprs. I was just wondering if anybody had used it or knew if it worked on smartphone or ppc?
Guest Confucious Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 I read a test of this in a PC mag once. It didn't work on a PC so I doubt if it would work on a smartphone
Guest Dr_StrangeTrick Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 Friend of mine lives has gone to retire in Spain, somewhere in the mountains and obviously he cant get broadband. He subscribed to Onspeed as they said it would give you broadband speed on a dialup etc. It is not that fast but he says it has made quite a difference to his Internet performance. The stuff from Onspeed says you can use it with Broadband as well, but I will wait and see.
Guest Confucious Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 Here'sa review that says it does work. but their test was done using a site that tests speed which reported the speed as being higher. It also says there is a delay for each page while it is compressed and the other report I read said that in their tests the delay outweighed any gains. It also doesn't compress audio or video. So, I guess, in some circumstances you could see a speed improvement. I don't know if you can try the service as I'm sure the gain (if any) would vary from user to user depending on what they do. But as it is NOT available for the SmartPhone it's pretty irellivant here anyway
