Guest Koelie Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 Hi, I don't know much yet about smarphones and bluetooth. After messing around with wrong Microsoft drivers, I finally have my Generic bluetooth device up and running. It finds both my C500 and the Nokia 6230 of my wife. But now I'm lost... First of all, I have a new folder on the desktop which is part of the bluetooth install, called My Bluetooh Places. I added both phones here and it shows a list of available services, some of them start up automatically, others manually. I am also able to add extra COM ports here or couple a COM port to a service. I guess, these are all services provided by the bluetooth device and only if the phone has the same service available, you can use it. Is that correct? What I would like to do is the following. If I turn my computer on and winXP boots up, I would like a bluetooth connection with my phones (if they are nearby) right away. They should synchronize only calendar and tasks. For the Nokia, this means a connection via bluetooth between the phone and Nokia Suite. For my C500 this means a connection with MS activeSync 3.7.1. This last one doesn't work... When I try connection settings, it runs the COM-check over and over again, but never sees the correct COM-port. On the phone an outgoing and incoming COM port is set and available. Butit just doesn't come up with a green "connect" icon. I am able to establish a connection between the bluetooth device and the C500 by choosing a service from the device and click "connect". So I tried to establsh a connection using the serial port service and then start using ActiveSync. But this doesn't work either... One more question: I would like to send faxes from my PC (using WinFaxPro) through my C500 (only sending, no receiving). I chose Bluetooth modem in WinFax. I tried both TAPI and any COM port. But every time I send a test fax it can't find the modem... I know this combination works, but I can't figure out what I am doing wrong... Ok, so here are my questins in short: - Is it possible to have a bluetooth connection automatically after WinXP boots up? - How do I get ActiveSync to work properly via bluetoooth and synchronize automatically when the phone is near? - Do I have to set additional things in the phone except the Bluetooth settings and BT SerialPort Setup in configuration? - I realise it's off topic  : but does it generally just work the same with the Nokia and Nokia Suite? - How to send faxes with Winfax through my C500 via bluetooth? I hope someone can answer one or more of my questions because this bluetooth thing is really annoying me... :x Michael
Guest Confucious Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 ActiveSync can't be set to start automatically with the C500, it has to be initiated from the phone. Activesync->Menu->Connect Via Bluetooth. If it doesn't work there are plenty of threads in the C500 forum explaining how to troubleshoot it. Sorry can't help with WinFax have you tried going to their support site and seeing if there is anything there? If not, hopefully someone else here will be able to help. Again, with the Nokia I believe synching has to be done manually (and IMHO, is nowhere near as good as activesync when it's working) Good Luck
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 BT to ACtivsync setup can be found HERE As for using your phone as a modem for the PC via BT I cannot find a post regarding the use of BT in this way.
Guest Koelie Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 BT to ACtivsync setup can be found HERE. Thanks, but I already had a look at this thread and unfortunately it didn't help for me... I also had a look at other threads and sites and googled my a** off, but I can't get things working here... I also tried to find the anwer in other topics, but I still can't find out what I am doing wrong... I set up the phone, I set up my bluetooth device, they connect together, but I can't use the services that came with the device with my C500. So I have to use ActiveSync, which I believe is a total disaster in modern computer technology... Feels a bit like setting up Microsft Exchange; it's just not it... But maybe that's because it doesn't work as it should... Isn't there an alternative for the C500? Anyway, I've re-installed activesync 3.7.1. yesterday, reset all phone settings for bluetooth and tried to connect from the phone. When I start Synchr. in the ActiveSync menu, I get a server error and a windows error. The first wants me to setup user and serversettings. I have no idea which user/password settings it wants, because I only used a code for pairing the C500 and the PC. The windows error states, it failed to connect so I should check connection or proxy settings... Is this necessary with a bluetooth connection? When I just chose connect via BT, it keeps trying to connect. Without success... During all of this, the Active Sync icon stays grey, though all connection settings are tagged and should be working...
Guest Confucious Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 Are you using WinXP and SP2? If so have you looked here? If you still have problems let us know. It can be a right pain to set up but once it's working it's great. Good luck.
Guest Koelie Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 Are you using WinXP and SP2? If so have you looked here? . First of all, thanks for your help and quick response. I tried the link you've sent me, but I'm still running into trouble. I copy-paste the advice of this link into my message and try to comment on what is happening during my installation: -quote advice- Here is what worked for me - others have got it working without as much hassle but this is what I had to do: 1) Pair the device with the PC 2) Add incoming and outgouing Com Ports on the PC 3) Add incoming and outgouing Com Ports on the phone (Configuration -> BT SerialPortSetup) 4) Turn BT OFF on the phone 5) Reboot PC 6) Turn BT ON on the phone (aftre PC has booted) 7) Go into ActiveSync on the phone ->Menu -> Connect Via BluieTooth Worked for me. -end of quote- 1) The BT device is installed and pairing is no problem. However, after booting WinXP the device is recognized, but not automatically connected. 2) There was only one COM port on the PC, I was able to add a few through the BT device driver software: But I had two choices: -Add COM ports to local services or, -Add COM ports to Client Applications. I added COM ports at both, so that both options have two COM ports added now, which are COM 10, 11, 12, 13. If I have a look at My Computer/properties/device manager, these COM ports are all mentioned in the Ports section as 'Bluetoooth Communications Port'. Is this all there is to do? Do I have to link these COM ports to the ones on my phone somewhere? 3) I did that. There wasn't much to choose though: It's fixed to COM 6 for inbound and COM 7 for outbound connections. They were tagged on, so I guess this is ok. step 4-7) Did that and connected from the phone through the ActiveSync menu. When I choose connect via BT, the computer accepts this and the BT icon in the sys tray turns green (The ActiveSync item stays grey though). So far, I guess everything is ok... However, the ActiveSync program doesn't respond. When I open it and choose "get connected", it is trying to loacte the mobile device. It checks only COM 1, 2, 3 (1 and 2 are inactive and 3 is my physical modem in the PC). It doesn't continue to COM 10, 11,12, 13 which were created for bluetooth. This is with all connection options tagged... Even after reboot this is all there is, so I cannot point the program to the phone. On the phone, in the meantime, the ActiveSync is trying to connect, but responding with errors. So there is a BT-connection, but the ActiveSync part doesn't work. There are two errors: -The synchronizing with server error, error code: DEV_9. It says I need to enter server and user information. But I have no clue which user and password to enter in teh Options of ActiveSync on the phone... - The synchronizing with Windows error, no error code. It says the connection attempt failed and I should check dial- or proxy settings. But I guess this shouldn't be necessary with BT? BTW, yes I am running WinXP Pro SP2. Another funny thing is, that after a while the "general" BT-Connection between my phone and my PC is dropped, so I have to re-connect first. I thought that one of te advantages of BT is, that a connection (and synchronization if wanted) can take place automatically whenever two paired devices are near. Isn't this correct? Well, thanks to your help, I have a BT connection now, so I'm getting a little closer. I hope you can help me out with this ActiveSync stuff, before I start killing people... Michael
