Guest littlespaceman Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 Hi Can anyone explain something to me? I am trying to activesync via Bluetooth between my laptop and my Orange C500. My laptop says the BT serial port is Com 11 (and I can't find any way of changing this) and on the C500 it appears the inbound port is hardtuned to COM 6 and the Outbound port is hardtuned to Com 7 - the only options here (on the phone) appear to be to tick or untick the boxes assciated with the above hardtuned com ports. Although the phone and laptop recognise the other, they won't sync. Does the laptop BT serial com port HAVE to be on 6 or 7 to agree with the phone, or is the problem something else?
Guest chucky.egg Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 I had problems with my PC BT ports at first, I don't think I did anything to fix it other than removing the device and drivers and then reinstalling
Guest Confucious Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 the port on the PC does NOT have to be the same as the one on the phone. For ActiveSync to work you only nee the outbound COM port (Com7 on the phone) if you have both it should have installed 2 BT Modems you need to set activeSync to the incoming Modem port on the PC and then connect from the phone. I am assuming from what you have sad that you are using WinXP SP2.
Guest littlespaceman Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 I'm not using SP2, but the ActiveSync on the laptop has NO option to connect via BT - which some people I have seen mention as an option on other threads. It IS the latest version of AvtiveSync

Guest Confucious Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 The option to connect via BT is on the phone. You CANNOT initiate the connection from your laptop. What BT dongle do you have and what stack does it use?
Guest littlespaceman Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 I understand that - and I try to connect from the phone, with no success. Other people say that then, once connected you shoud have the option on the desktop to 'Sync via Bluetooth' - unless I am misunderstanding that and that is actually from the phone they are talking about.Seems this Active Sync via BT is nowhere near as straight forward as it really should be, judging from the threads here about it! I am using a TDK dongle - So just to confirm, the COM ports on the desktop - do they have to match the phone. My PC assigned BT serial port to 11, and Active Sync only recognises Com1 and 4. The phone is hardtuned to inbound Com 6 and outbound Com 7...
Guest Confucious Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Does the TDK dongle use Widcomm stack? The Sync via bluetooth option is on the phone NOT the PC. The com ports don't have to match. Have you rebooted the PC with BT turned off on the phone? Under Control Panel->Phones and Modems does the BT modem show up? If so what port?
Guest littlespaceman Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 Hi - Thanks for the reply. The TDK dongle uses a BT software that came with it - it's called BT neighbourhood I have rebooted the PC, and still no connection - I can send files via BT, so the two devices are communicating, but I can't sync via BT The BT modem shows up as being on COM 13. So that definitely doesn't have to match the phones COM ports?
Guest Confucious Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 Can you change the COM Port the modem is on (Control Panel->Phone and Modem Options->Modems ->Properties ->Advanced ->Advanced Port settings ActiveSync will only recognise up to a certain number of ports (I can't remember what the highest port number is off the top of my head). Try chhanging it to a lower number, rebooting with BT turmned off on the phone and then turn BT on on tyhe phone ant try connecting (from the phone) again.
Guest littlespaceman Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 That's exactly the problem! I can't change the ports... And when I look for the following ... Control Panel->Phone and Modem Options->Modems ->Properties ->Advanced ->Advanced Port settings... ... there is no Advanced port settings option.
Guest Confused Stu Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 Hi. I had problems getting my activesync to work over Bluetooth, and after a week I managed to work out the problem. Activesync only recognises COM ports 1 to 9 - it doesn't recognise anything in double figures!!!! In order to fix this, in Windows XP I had to go into Start, Control Panel, Network & Internet Connections, Phone & Modem Options (on the left). Select the Modems tab, then clear out any modems that you don't use anymore. After this, re-set up your Bluetooth Serial Port and it should assign a lower number than COM10. If you've still got too many modems listed for this to work, delete enough to set the bluetooth up below 10, then add back the modems you had to delete. After all, it's Activesync with the problem - not any other software. Hope this helps guys.
Guest littlespaceman Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 Wish it was that simple! When I do as you suggest, and go to 'Control Panel, Network & Internet Connections, Phone & Modem Options (on the left)... ...there is no 'Phone and Modem Options' settings tab - that option is just not there. Starting to think that all things Microsoft are rubbish... Probably not alone on that one!...
Guest Confused Stu Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 The only reason I can think of that my last message wouldn't work is if you've switched your Control Panel to ""Classic View". If this is the case, opening the Control Panel will give you a load of icons to double click rather than a list of things to single click. Either double click on the icon for "Phone and Modem Options" - or click on "Switch to Category View" on the left and then follow my previous instructions. Let me know if this works, OK?
Guest mrrippey Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 I got blue sync using my 5600 but what I want to be able to do is when I go out of range (it disconnects as it should) and come back, it automatically finds and syncs again. I have to manually goto ActiveSync to sync again. Would making the phone discoverable do this (as oppsoed to having bluetooth On all the time)? Rippey
Guest Confucious Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 mrrippey - it would be nice, wouldn't it? Unfortunatly it can't be done.
Guest Dr Who Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 Same problem Mr Spaceman. Activesync won't look above com 9 (as mentioned previously) and my BT coms are 10 and above. Came across this about a month ago and for the sake of my own sanity I let it go after a few days of screaming. Only thing I can suggest is uninstall your BT hardware in device manager, restart your computer and add new hardware for the BT and hope it drops your com ports in on lower numbers. Couldn't be bothered in the end, USB transfer is faster and works with WMP10.
Guest Dr Who Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 If you haven't got a modem installed you won't see phone and modem options.
Guest Confused Stu Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 Fair enough Dr Who - that would explain the symptoms as well! So the basic problem is that the Bluetooth is setting the COM port too high. I'm sure Windows sets the lowest available COM port, so we need to work out what's sitting in COM ports 1 to 9 and remove (even if temporarily) one of them. OK, slightly different (hopefully easier to answer) question: Anyone know of a way of finding a list of what's using all your COM ports?
Guest Dr Who Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 This is exactly the info I needed a month or so ago, never did find a resolution. Best guess is that the lower port numbers are reserved (on my system at least) for the MS BT coms. I am guessing that you may be able to force the com port numbers in the registry but I was not willing to start poking around when I don't know enough about what I am doing. Be interested if you come up with a resolution to this, as I said before it almost drove me insane!!!
Guest littlespaceman Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 Hi Confused Stu Only just saw your reply to my thread (page 1 of this forum) from a while ago. Afraid I tried tried switching views etc - still no luck
Guest DonKraft Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004 This is driving me nuts. I cannot make this work. I have spent countless hours fiddling with settings, reading guides etc, but all I get is the stupid activesync green connection rotation thingy laughing right in my face saying "you thought you were home free with bluetooth and your new C500, but you were wrong buddy!". I have a laptop with an internal bluetooth thingy. I run XP sp2, and have installed WIDCOMM drivers. I have the phone connected, and it works great for other services (copying files, audio gateway etc). BT Serial setup on the phone is: Incoming COM: COM6 Outbound COM: COM7 And Activesync is set up on the C500 to use bluetooth. When I press "Connect via bluetooth" from activesync on the phone, my bluetooth icon on the pc lights up green, and my serial port is connected. ...but Activesync on the mocks me by doing absolutely nothing. Here are the activesync settings on the pc: And the version of activesync is 3.7.1 By selecting "File -> Connection Settings" and pressing ok, activesync does this...: Which frankly I find offending. :D I know connections must be initialized from the phone, but maybe this behaviour by activesync indicates something useful... Other (perhaps) relevant settings: I have no idea what to try next. I am hoping someone can spot, what I am doing wrong... Thanks in advance. - Klaus, Denmark
Guest Slsk-addict Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004 Hi... I posted this yesterday in anpther thread: Hi, after 2 days of work, I finally have it working again I got the widcomm driver from my dongle provider: www.sitecom.com Plug in the bluetooth dongle. Windows will install it as a Generic Bluetooth radio. Install the widcomm 1.4.2.11 driver. Go to Device manager and right click the Generic Bluetooth Radio. Select 'update driver'. Choose 'No, not this time' and click next. Select 'Install from a list or specific location (advanced)' and click next. Select 'Don't Search, I will choose the driver to install'. Select 'Have disk', browse to the folder E:SoftwareWindows98me2000XP where E is the letter of the CD-Rom (or the folder of the downloaded 1.4.2.11 software). Select the 'btwusb.inf' file and click OK. Select the Sitecom bluetooth adapter and click finish. No you can use the widcomm software without any issues.
Guest Confucious Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004 @DonKraft - if you have SP2 why are you using Widcomm drivers? I think the problem is that your Local Services Port should be COM 5 and you don't need the Clien Application port. Your PC is trying to connect to your phone on COM5 which is why it tries to connect. You need the connection to be made from the phone and it *should* work. If not, delete the widcomm drivers and just use the inbuilt BT Stack HTH
Guest Dr Who Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004 EXACTLY the same setup as me. Only thing that finally seemed to get it to work for me was setting the authorisations. See megalomaniacs4u post in this thread http://www.modaco.com/viewtopic.php?t=1162...er=asc&start=30 After setting this mine all miraculously started working.
