Guest tattooedpierre Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 Hi, I just wanted to ask a quick question.. I've been reading many of the comments on Co-Pilot and TomTom for my C500 and all seems to be fine.. I am leaning, however, towards the TomTom Go package and was wondering if anyone had experienced any problems with this in Scotland? In a thread I had read some concerns that the maps were perhaps not very complete/accurate in Wales and Scotland so I wondered if anyone could confirm this for me? Much appreciated, Pierre
Guest Confucious Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 I have CoPilot but as I've not been to Scotland I can't really comment. If you want me to look up some places for you let me know. CoPilot can work on a full address or house number/street and Postcode (It uses the firt 5 digits of PC then needs street/house No.) If you post details of some places you thimnk might not be there then i could check in CoPilot and maybe someone else could in TomTom. HTH
Guest tattooedpierre Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 Hey, Thanks for your reply. I know this may be completely unhelpful but I didn't think of anywhere in particular.. it's just for 400-odd quid I wanted to be sure it would know its way around Glasgow (at least!) since that's where I would be likely travelling about. Plus outlying towns as well. Thanks, Pierre
Guest beersoft Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 i've found the tomtom maps better than the copilot ones the other alternative is mapopopoplis, which is better than co pilot but not quite as good as tomtom later Owen
Guest the_ugly_north Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 Beersoft, The mapopolis maps (IMHO) seem *far* better than anything else out there at the moment. It picks up my new address and my old one (both new houses; 5 years and 3 years respectively). TT or co-pilot doesn't pick up either!!
Guest barrybryce Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 When trying to follow directions I'm a bit worried about the number of one way streets and blocked off roads in cities that mapopolis doesn't know about, but otherwise it's very good (havent tried the others though).
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 19, 2004 Report Posted November 19, 2004 TomTom uses the latest availale maps, the only place I have found not to be listed is one 200 yard section of the new Newbury bypass, but that is still being worked on.
Guest Dr_StrangeTrick Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Don't know about Scotland but I have to disagree with you there about TomTom. I have a number of roads which are not on TomTom's 'Latest maps', nor do they appear on the TomTom Go or TomTom Pocket PC (some of these roads are over 50 years old :!: ) and I have a collection of roundabouts where TomTom has got the exits wrong (It tells me to take the 3rd exit and there are only 2 :x ) All these roads appear in Mapopolis and Co-Pilot (but they both use Navtech maps). One of my clients has one of these the this has all the roads as well. I emailed TomTom to tell them their roads/islands are wrong but they insist on telling me that they are right and I have got the roads mixed up with some other location  I would agree with Confucious and post a list of roads so we can let you know. With regard to Mapopolis, they are preparing new Europe maps as we speak so I would tell them about your one way problems and they may be resolved before release.
Guest Confucious Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 So there e have it. Everyone disagrees! Having only tried CoPilot (I got it because it was cheap) I have nothing to compare it with but it seems to have all new roads round my area and is pretty accurate. Others sware by TomTom or Mapopolis. Presumeably this means they all have different faults. You will probably find that in and arround large cities like Glasgow they will all be OK but elsewhere - who knows? Short of giving us specific examples to try I'm not sure what to sugest. I beliece Mapopolis let you try their maps before you buy but none of the others do. So far I'm very happy with CoPilot but I have no doubt I would be saying the same if I had TomTom or Mapopolis so, the choice is yours....
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 I have a number of roads which are not on TomTom's 'Latest maps', nor do they appear on the TomTom Go or TomTom Pocket PC (some of these roads are over 50 years old :!: ) and I have a collection of roundabouts where TomTom has got the exits wrong (It tells me to take the 3rd exit and there are only 2 :x ) Interesting as TomTom use Ordnance Survey for their maps in the UK
Guest dynamo Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 I have also found TomTom to be less accurate.. Near where i live (headingley, leeds) there are a bunch of roads which are blocked between headingley lane and grove lane. And tomtom even finds a connection between the end of shire oak road and wood lane which is just a pedestrian path! Mapopolis and autoroute 2002 both show these blockages and won't route you through them. - i think that this is a problem of being based on ordnance survey maps. I don't think they were made with routing in mind at least! TomTom even thinks the road round the corner from my house (buckingham road) is one way! Confucious: it seems that multimap is built on the same maps as tomtom (it also doesn't account for the road blocks and the footpath at the end of shire oak road either), have a look at those roads i've mensioned and see if they're ok on copilot.. dynamo
Guest Dr_StrangeTrick Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Taken from my original post This is the first one, even my mates dad used to go there when he was young and that was 50 years ago :!: Mikes Model Shop This is the one everyone told me to go to instead (No 1 in Yell search) The Gaming Crypt I checked 5 address with the guys from Co-Pilot at the meet and Co-Pilot had all of them. Frankly thats not good enough for the price, when Mapopolis came out in March it was planning routes through the M6 Toll and thats before it was even opened and those maps where dated Nov 2003  If thats how good 1 year old maps are then I cant wait to see what this years maps are going to be like.
Guest dynamo Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 That's really wierd Dr_StrangeTrick.. That first one (mikes model shop) can't be found if you do a search using the postcode, but if you enter the nearby town instead (kingstanding) then the brockwell road can be found! But the second one (Collingwood drive) can't be found whether you use the postcode or the local town.. Both of the roads are actually on the TT map, but the 'Find..' function just can't locate them. So there's either a bug in the search function or the database hasn't completely enumerated all of the roads.
Guest Confucious Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Co Pilot finds both the addresses in Dr_StrangeTrick's post. Not quite sure wich blockages you are refering to dynamo so I have attached a copy of CoPilot's mnap for the relevent area. HTHImage1.jpg
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 I found the first one using postcode first go, but the second address is a blank for me :? I will pass this info on to TomTom
Guest dynamo Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Co Pilot finds both the addresses in Dr_StrangeTrick's post. Not quite sure wich blockages you are refering to dynamo so I have attached a copy of CoPilot's mnap for the relevent area. HTH I couldn't see your attachment, maybe you can see mine.. Its a map of headingley in leeds taken from autoroute 2002. I've highlighted the roads which have road blocks. TT thinks all of these are not blocked. It also thinks the street with the arrow is one way (it is definitely not)!leeds-map.jpg
Guest Confucious Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 When I first viewed my previous post I couldn't see the attachment so I attached it again, then it was there twice! I deleted one and can now see it once. I can confirm all the highlighted breaks in the roads are there and Buckingham Road is NOT marked as one way. HTH
Guest Dr_StrangeTrick Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 I didn't keep the other address's from that day out, only got those two because they where the only one's I bought anything from. But I had to go here 2 weeks ago and again this does not show in TomTom. Not meaning to hijack the thread but every time I really need to use TomTom (I.E. not just playing with it going to work) it has proved to be useless. I have managed to convert the directors and managers at work from Nokia's to C500's thanks to Paul's help with AUTD, but now they are all gagging for Sat Nav. Based on its 'real life' performance I would be shot if I recommended it.
Guest Confucious Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 Co-Pilot has no trouble finding it. I'm sure there must be places that TomTom can find that CoPilot can't but it seems you would be better off with CoPilot Dr_StrangeTrick - at least then you could point out all the places CoPilot can't find
