Boy have I done a lot of stuffing around with this. I've checked the forums but couldn't find quite the right answer so I hope this helps someone. Here's how I got connected:

1. Bond your PC with your Phone.

2. By default XP should have set your PC up as 'Discoverable' . To check double click your Bluetooth Icon on your PC , go to View or Modify Configuration and check the Accessibility tab. You'll 'Let other bluetooth devices discover this computer' checked. If not check it.

3. Find the PC with your phone.

Start / Settings / Bluetooth (By the way, make sure your Bluetooth is ON)

then press the Menu, choose 1, Bonded Devices then hit Menu again, and choose New device.

It takes a moment or two so be patient and eventually your PC should appear under the Discovered Devices: When it does, press Add.

Make a pin, e.g. 0000 on your phone and press Done. Then your PC should ask you to enter a pin as well, enter the same pin 0000

Your PC name should display on your phone and you can press Done.

You are bonded - but not Connected!

5. Double click your PC's BT icon and then View My Bluetooth Services. Right click on the Bluetooth Serial Port, select Properties and note the COM port (e.g. COM5) that has been selected.

6. Now make sure this is the same port ActiveSync on your PC is using under ActiveSync Connection settings. "Allow Serial . . . on this COM port" should be selected and the COM port should be the same as the BT one e.g. COM5.

Ok, ActiveSync is ready for you.

7. Now on the phone. Go into ActiveSync on your mobile.

Go to the Menu and the 1 Option. Now 2 PC Settings and then MENU again and 1 Advanced. It proabably says USB - change this to Bluetooth.

'Done' your way out.

8. Press menu and 3 Connect via Bluetooth.

9. Your PC will ask if want to allow the connection and you Ok this.

You should sync now.

Hope it helps someone. At least I can look this up again when I forget how to do it all!!

Good guide. Thanks - just a few points to add:

Option 7 is not needed (Mine still says USB but works fine)

Option 8 - be careful it can change between option 3 and 4 - I have no idea why but these two options swap round sometimes so don't automatically press 3.

You might have to reboot the PC with BT turned off on the phone for it to work.

If the COM port of the BT Modem is greater than COM9 ActiveSync won't recognise it. It can be changed under Control Panel-> Phone and Modem Options and if all the lower number COM ports are "In Use" but you have nothing using them, change the COM Port to the same as under Incoming Port in BT and ignore all the warnings about your computer exploding (or something luke that) if you do this. and then reboot the PC.

You're probably right about 7. but on my Xphone it wouldn't connect until I changed that. You'd think it'd be a lot easier than all this wouldn't you?

You would have thought so, but if it was, what would we have to moan about?

Hi, thanks for the information, but I do not know where is my problem, but i can't manage to sync my smartphone with my desktop via bluetooth.

I am using ActiveSync 3.7.1, it is the latest version and it is supposed to support Bluetooth connection, I have configured the serial COM port as indicted in Serial Port Connection in Bluettoth places.

I think the problem is when I configure PC Settings in the phone I can't choose the device I want to to sync, only it is shown one already fixed, even after connected and bonded.

My phone is Qtex 8010, and when I acces to Bluetooth > Bluetooth > menu there is "devices" instead of "Bonded devices" as you said, I have contaceted to brightpoint support and they have told that these both labels are the same, but when the connection is stablished nothing about bonding is said, only: "Devices are connected".

Every suggestions will be wellcome, thanx

JR can you discover the phone from the PC? Before you bond you have to 'discover' the device that you want to bond to.

If the device is conected it is already bonded.

This is more an update for my own reference but if you find it useful then great. I had trouble getting Activesync to connect after I bonded.

I found that if I discover the PC from the phone it works better than if I discover the phone from the PC when setting up the bluetooth
