Error 678 means there is no answer so you are not connecting. What makes you think Orrange block oports?

This has nothing to do with blocked ports.

That init code it to tell the phone that it is being used as a modem. I don't believe that it ever get's dialed like a regular dial up connection to a ISP would. At least that’s how it is in the states with my 5600.

If you have a working GPRS connection then it should work. There is no dialing in a GPSR connection. You are simply tethering your phone with whatever other device.

I take it you have the correct drivers installed and everything configured correctly on the device that’s trying to use the phones connection?

sorry i think our wires are crossed somewhere. i have managed to use my phone to access the internet and check emails etc. so i do have drivers and everything. however when i use the number *99# i cannot connect to steam (to activate bloody hl2 cus my uni blocks it) so was wondering if i could dial up using a traditional method, ie with a username and password to a local number using someone like btyahoo so i can connect to steam or is it not possible?

I see.....

So if I'm reading everything correctly your wireless provided is blocking ports you want to use. Your question is can you just use a regular Dial-Up ISP that doesn't block ports.

I have not tried this with my 5600 but if the phone supports it, it will work as I have done it in the past. All you need to do is create a new Dial-Up connection from the machine using the phone and instead of *99# as the number put the number to your ISP (username and password also of course).

you'd think so wouldn't you, but it jst gets the error 678 saying device isnt responding, so i thought it was because of the init string or whatever so i deleted that, still nothing, *99# connects everytime, but trying another isp just doesnt seem to work, are there any other settings that i need to apply to either my phone or on my computer?

I used to do this a lot about a year ago, but haven't tried it in a while. I found that the modems at the ISPs were VERY picky. I tried 2 ISP that would never work, and had one ISP that worked it just would take like 3-7 tries to finally get a good connection.

The phone would dial authenticate and hang up. This was with a Nokia 3650. Later if I have some free time I will take my laptop and hook the phone up and try to dial in using a ISP.

can u remember what isp u eventually got to work?

It was a local ISP called Nettally.

I will say that http://www.access4free.com/ will not work.

Like I said before I'll test this later when I get home from work and have a few extra minutes. What used to work for me may not work with the SMT5600.

My 5600 as a modem works great! I'm using it right now to post this message.

I had my laptop configured to use GPSR so the phone was setup with all drivers etc.

I plugged in the phone (USB).

Disabled active sync.

Activated the modem link on the phone.

Went to IE and created a new dial-up connection using the phone as the modem.

I entered the number to the ISP (I used access4free).

Saved connection.

Tried to open a page in IE and was prompted for a dial-up connection.

Entered username password, clicked dial.

Unlike my Nokia phone I never saw the 5600 dial anything.

The "data call active" icon appeared and the page displayed. (Google)

Disconnected.

I redialed and have had a connection for at least 10 minutes.
