Hello everyone, I just got my first smartphone yesterday, a mpx220 and so far i really like it. I have some questions and I apologize if they have been asked before and that they are all probably really obvious questions, but like I said im new to this and I havnt ever even tried installing an app yet, so here they are:

How do i download/play music/movies on my phone?

How do i download games? I tired downloading the demo for Eclipse First Wave to my 128 mb SD card and it said I needed 5 Mb of free memory to play the game, but this is a brand new card, any ideas?

I think thats it for now but dont worry there will be many more 8) .

p.s- have patience with me im so new to this :?

You need to install Activsync on your pc then connect the phone

to create a new partnership and syncronise your contacts etc.

Once synced you can the use Activsync to explorer the phone and

copy your music to the phone.

The best place to store music is on the storage card to save space on your phone.

The same applies for Eclipse, when installing the game choose the location of the storage card for installation.

No i have not formatted the card yet how do i do that? The game started working after turning the phone off and then on. Oh and i played my first Mp3 on my smartphone today, very cool 8) .

Ok now i got another question. I clicked on file viewer and it said memory low. So then i check resource manager and it gave me:

Device storage- 2.58 used/32.51

Card storage- 18.70/120.03

RAM info: Total memory- 22.94, Program Memory- 21.55, Used- 17.32

So i guess i have been using to much RAM memory, thing is i dont really know what that is  . Can someone shed some light on this for me?

You can format your storage card with Binary's essential Task Manager. Although your phone will have something similar pre-installed, this is a much better tool. The same goes for their Smart Explorer. Having said that, I haven't ever had to format my storage cards as it shouldn't be necessary with new cards.

In simple terms the phone memory is divided into RAM & ROM. ROM is the OS & operator stuff that you can't really do anything about. RAM is the memory space for running software on your phone and for things like ringtones & homescreens you've added yourself. It is this that gets eaten up quickly and so you should always install games & apps to the storage card rather than the phone. Also keep ringtones & homescreens to a minimum and definitely don't store MP3s etc on the phone !

For example on my C500 the physical memory is 21.62mb / free 5.55mb which is out of my control and therefore nothing to worry about.

The Storage folder (ROM) totals 27.98mb / free 18.33mb. It is this that I keep an eye on. A reboot of the phone is usually the best way to get rid of temporary files and clear up some memory.

Sorry for rambling, hope this helps

Normally the card will be pre-formatted so unless you are having installation problems (which you are not) I would not bother with a

format.

As mentioned above idealy all apps and games etc should be installed to the storage card to save space on the phone. If you have installed anything to the phone's storage I would uninstall them and reinstall to the suggested location.

When you had the message "5 Mb of free memory to play the game" this means that you did not have enough physical memory (ram) to run the game. This can be for numerous reasons but more than likely it was because you had quite a few other applications running in the background such as Media Player etc.

This is where applications such as Task Manager come in useful as you

can stop applications running in the background to free up some physical memory on the phone.

Thanks alot guys. Ok, so iv been trying to delete some stuff and i think iv run into a couple of problems. I deleted the 2 games that i had downloaded which i think were in the card, because when it prompted me where to store it I picked card. So now when i go to games I can still see the names of the 2 games, but the icon next to them are blank and they are not there when I check storagecard>progra files> games. Anyone know whats up? Also, I tried to delete those pictures that came with the phone (an angel, a pond etc...), but it says that I cannnot delete these files, is that because they are on the ROM? Also, where do I go to look and use everything on my card? Which apps do you guys think are necessary to have and where should I go to download them? First smartphone im just trying not to get overwhelmed

Looks like you've deleted the games from the card, so the shortcuts in your Games folder don't actually point to anything anymore.

Not having an MPx220 I don't know what those pictures are, but I wouldn't worry about them.

You should get Binary's Smart Explorer and Task Manager, available Smartphone.net or at Handango. Both are essential Smartphone additions as they are great improvements on the pre-installed efforts.

They'll help you understand your phone a whole lot better

Ok, i downloaded task manager and it works well, but when i click on sshow process list the processing dialogue comes up and doesnt go away I then must close tm or it wont go away. Also, when im looking at system status everything is ok except for IPSM Folder it says "Error Occured." Why is this?

For this problem I would suggest you post your problem in the Binarys section of the site. Where your phone is new the file system and OS etc will be slightly different to say the C500 and so Task Manager may need to be updated.

If you contact Binarys they will probably send you an updated version of their app to try and report back if it works properly.

They are one of the best for support

Did you uninstall them properly by going to StartSettingsRemove Programs? if not and you manually deleted them this will cause a problem.

Also, I tried to delete those pictures that came with the phone (an angel, a pond etc...), but it says that I cannnot delete these files, is that because they are on the ROM

Simply put yes.

Could you please post the file ladder for your phone, for example the C500 has the following,

Profiles

Storage

Storage Card

Temp

Windows

I am curious to see if Moto have made anychanges.

The file ladder is:

Profiles

Storage

Storage Card

Temp

Windows

Yeah i uninstalled them manually, but i just did start/settings/remove programs and everything is good now.

Oh and i just downloaded Betaplayer and I want to know what i need to do next to play video. Do i need to download the PocketDivxEncoder? Or do i just put a DVD in and copy that to my card? Will i need to do any of those file conversions that iv read so much about?

Thanks again

You will need to convert your selected movie to be compatable with your phone.

As you mention there are a few guides around tyhe site especially in the Articles and FAQ sections.

There are also standalon applications to do the hard work for you, like DVD to Smartphonefrom www.handango.com

Yes and I must have been half asleep not to notice it.

Make sure you have the latest version of Task Manager from

www.binarys.com as you do not have an IPSM on your phone it is

now called Storage and the error you have was known on older versions on the application. Basically it's looking for the wrong folder.

Thanks, I have version 1.1, and supposedly the latest is 2.0, but its not freeware anymore? http://www.msmobiles.com/news.php/2634.html

Oh well, while im typing I might as well ask a few more questions. Is it possible to change the order of the programs in the start menu? like instead of Internet Explorer being #4 you can switch it to #1 or #3 or whatever. (kind of a dumb question) but how do I setup my E-mail  . I use AOL for my E-mail needs, but im not sure if thats Pop3 or not. Also, my physical memory has been has been going down and I only have 4 mb left, but when I check task manager I have no apps open. Whats up with that? Oh and i havnt downloaded any ringtones or homescreens or anything to the phone. Thanks again.

p.s- what would i do without you guys? :D

First bit of advice don't believe what you read at msmobiles.

Binarys Task Manager has always been shareware, and if you choose to pay the small charge will help the author to improve the excellent app

For Start menu alterations click on the word Tweaks

You can't sync AOL email with your Smartphone unfortunately. I'm not sire what type it is but it's a problem particular to that company.

Memory leak is something you have to get used to. A reboot will clear it up for you.
