'Device name already in use' Activesync problem

Hi all, should know this by now but can't remember and the Search page isn't loading, just says 'done' as if IE has finished loading albeit with a blank white screen.

Anyway, my activesync isn't letting me use the default device name of Smartphone as it says it's already being used. I've already checked and all my previous activesync profiles have been removed and the E200 has been freshly hard reset.

Isn't there a registry entry I need to edit? Is this because I installed over an old installation of Activesync without deleting the 'Smartphone' profile?

Anyone?

Click on Tweaks for the fix you need

ActiveSync Name tweak

Wanna change the name of your phone for ActiveSync?

Go into RegEdit and change this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>Ident

Select 'Values'

Select 'Name' (sometimes theres 2, dunno why, just edit any)

and change the Value Data to the new name for your phone (no spaces)

Next time you plug in yer phone, ActiveSync should connect as normal, but the name will have changed.

D'oh! Spoke too soon.

Didn't work. Interestingly there were three values, two called 'Name' and one called 'OrigName'. OrigName was already Smartphone (the name I want which the PC's activesync isn't letting me use, saying it's already in use). So I followed your advice and changed Name from the temp name I'd chosen (Smartphone2) to Smartphone.

Unfortunately I was greeted on trying to sync with a PC activesync message something along the lines of 'The device connected has the same name as an existing partnership, please rename your device or press cancel to sync as a guest'. I've double checked and the PC activesync only had the pre-existing Smartphone2 profile, no others!

EDIT: Problem resolved.

Found this webpage which helped no end...

It was indeed a problem with the Activesync registry on my PC.

I managed to trace the profiles folder on my C: drive which still had a Smartphone profile despite it not being integrated in Activesync. Once I deleted that it once again allowed me to use the device name.

Phew!

or open up activesync, goto File, Delete partnership, then re-create it.

That does not work with this particular problem as the first post mentioned.

I've already checked and all my previous activesync profiles have been removed

Awarner got it... a peculiar one in that as far as Activesync's menus showed I had no profiles yet I found one listed in the PC registry and on the harddrive (which once deleted has resolved the problem). I assume the problem was due to (re)installing activesync without removing previous partnerships.

And I knew I could rename it but I specifically wanted the name that Activesync claimed was in use...

Anyway, all resolved and thanks for your time guys.

Yep, pretty much the same as my solution, just that I traced it throught the PC registry...
