Guest rsca Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 hello, I own a Ipaq HX4700 with tomtom 3 and a gps bluetooth receiver. I'd like to use tomtom on my SDA as well. What are my options? Do i need to buy the whole tomtom mobile package? or can i use the receiver, and/or part of the software or maps that i have for my pocket pc? thanks for your advice!
Guest mwille Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 Software is a definate no-no.. I have tried a few things and TomTom Mobile on my C500 works like a charme with the TomTom 3 PPC maps
Guest rsca Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 so basically i just need the application tomtom mobile, right? and then i can use my maps from tomtom3...
Guest mwille Posted November 25, 2004 Report Posted November 25, 2004 Basically, yes... I should add that I have only tested with the Benelux map. TomTom only sell TT Mobile as a package, including maps though as far as I know...
Guest rsca Posted November 25, 2004 Report Posted November 25, 2004 well, i only use benelux. anyway, i'm sure i can find somewhere the program only...
Guest Confucious Posted November 25, 2004 Report Posted November 25, 2004 This seems to be one of the major drawbacks of TomTom - you can't just buy the software. So even though you already have the receiver and maps they expect you tio buy the whole package again. So much for customer loyalty. I would never advocate pirated software if you are going to use it regularly but you can see why people might be tempted. awarner - do you know why TomTom don't have an ugrade path?
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 25, 2004 Report Posted November 25, 2004 Thing is it's not really an upgrade as it is intended for a different device.
Guest Confucious Posted November 25, 2004 Report Posted November 25, 2004 Thing is it's not really an upgrade as it is intended for a different device. Yes but he owns a TomTom BT receiver and has bought the maps allready so sureley he should only have to buy the TomTom software for the new device (I agree it's not an upgrade).
Guest dynamo Posted November 25, 2004 Report Posted November 25, 2004 Thing is it's not really an upgrade as it is intended for a different device. I don't totally agree.. Surely what you're paying for is the maps and the basic core of the program. I doubt they totally rewrote the program to work on the smartphone! TTM already sells with two different device applications (symbian & windows SP) so why not just sell it to support all devices? For instance, they could sell it on a CD along with their BT/wired GPS receiver ready for any device. Selling it on an MMC card was a mistake.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 25, 2004 Report Posted November 25, 2004 That would make more sense but TomTom do not discuss their business practices as such with the general public. With the software you will only need the main application and not the maps as such so an application only option would be nice.
Guest TuurG Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 I doubt they totally rewrote the program to work on the smartphone!.I know for sure that the MOBILE app is completely rewritten, and can't be compared to the TTN3 application. TTM already sells with two different device applications (symbian & windows SP) so why not just sell it to support all devices? For instance, they could sell it on a CD along with their BT/wired GPS receiver ready for any device. Selling it on an MMC card was a mistake!. If all devices would have identical OS versions, that would be possible. But there is no standard, Windows SP can be different with every model (compare e200 and c500 bt issue) or (customized) ROM version.
Guest Confucious Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 Programs have to be re-written and supported for different devices and I certainly agree that TT should charge for the new program - but to insist you buy the maps again? And the receiver?
Guest TuurG Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 The app and voices are available as a download, for free. You are charged for maps when updated. The maps that come with the TomTom MOBILE package are a little bit newer then the ones supplied with TomTom Navigator 3. So TomTom is right in asking money for this. I do agree that a software only package would be great. Bottom line is that it is illegal to use the same map data on more then one device (simultaneously).
Guest colinp Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 can any1 tell me where i can buy western europe maps , i want to go to germany next year and i can only get as far as dover at the moment
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Try TomTom's site as they link to resellers who will be able to help.
Guest Maaz Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Basically, yes... I should add that I have only tested with the Benelux map. TomTom only sell TT Mobile as a package, including maps though as far as I know... It works fine with all TT3 maps. Just make sure you transfer the map files to a directory in the Root of your SD card, and that every map is transferred to a different folder in your ROOT. If you put the files there, TTM asks which map you want to open at startup.
Guest PrinceLight Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 It works fine with all TT3 maps. Just make sure you transfer the map files to a directory in the Root of your SD card, and that every map is transferred to a different folder in your ROOT. Hmmm.. Not Germany / Scandinavia / France maps from TT3... not here anyway... :?:

Guest LSmith4285 Posted December 2, 2004 Report Posted December 2, 2004 The app and voices are available as a download, for free. Where can I find this? Had a look around TomTom.com but I couldn't find it cheers
Guest bigdan Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 Voice files and other downloads are available from here. Does anyone know of anywhere else to get voice files or maybe someone knows a way of recording and inserting your own voice files. A list of other sites with POI files would also be nice.
