Axia's A108 communicator offers vanilla Windows CE .NET, a 1.3 megapixel video-capable camera, and one of the smallest form factor yet for Microsoft's mobile operating system.

The Axia A108 is the latest Asian communicator using Microsoft's Windows CE operating system, offering communicator features in a smartphone-sized device.

The Axia A108 is a communicator in a phone's clothing

Measuring 110 x 48 x 22 mm and weighing 120 grams, the Axia A108 is indeed small compared to other communicators on the market. Using a more phone-centric form factor, the Axia A108 offers a numeric keypad rather than a QWERTY thumbboard. The candybar design makes it easy to mistake for a smartphone, but the touchscreen and operating system propel it into the ranks of a full communicator.

The Axia A108 runs Windows CE .NET 4.2, the fourth generation of Microsoft's Windows CE operating system. However, rather than licensing Microsoft's Windows Mobile 2003 platform, Axia has made their own additions to the system to create a unique interface design. Still, the device includes a broad set of Microsoft applications such as Pocket Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player 9 Series, MSN Messenger, Transcriber handwriting recognition, and so forth. Instead of Microsoft Pocket Office, however, the Axia A108 includes Axia's own suite of applications including TextMaker and PlanMaker for Word and Excel files, respectively, a PIM suite, and a custom launcher.

The device itself is powered by a Freescale i.MX21 processor backed by 64 MB of Flash ROM and 64 MB of RAM (50 MB user-accessible). The screen is a 2.2 inch 18-bit color backlit TFT. The A108 also includes a 1.3 megapixel camera capable of both still images and MPEG4 and H.263 video recording. WAN connectivity is provided by a tri-band 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz GSM radio with internal antenna with data-connectivity available via GPRS Class 10. It includes Infrared support and a miniSD card slot, but not Bluetooth. The 1300 mAh Lithium Ion battery is rated for 3.5 hours talk time or 150 hours standby.

Pricing information for the Axia A108 is not yet available, nor is information on where and when it will be sold.
