Guest Tanko81 Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Lately when I try and download apps my comp says the compressed (zipped) folder is invalid or corrupted. This doesn't happen all the time, but it is becoming more and more frequent and I don't know why. Is it something wrong with my computer? A virus? My firewall settings? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
Guest gpcarreon (MVP) Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Is your machine on Windows XP? Try this... On your PC open Control Panel > Folder Options > File Types tab > Scroll down to ZIP extension > highlight then click Advanved button. Verify that 'Confirm open after download' is selected.
Guest Tanko81 Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004 Thanks for the detailed explanation and I checked to make sure the box was checked and it was, but I am still getting the same message
Guest element Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004 Are you downloading them from reliable sources? Cos it just might be that the files are corrupted. Have you tried it without the firewall turned on? There is a reason why the firewall might affect it, but I cant remember right now

Guest Confucious Posted December 4, 2004 Report Posted December 4, 2004 You are sure they are zip files not cabs? can you give us an example so we can try one to make sure it isn't corrupt!
Guest Johnny Yen Posted December 4, 2004 Report Posted December 4, 2004 Yes, i always downloaded from reliable sources and i havnt tried it with my firewall turned off. How do i do that anyways? Depends on the firewall. For instance Norton out an icon in the system tray. Click it and choose Disable. You should have it listed in the programs menu in any case and there should be a disable option.
Guest Confucious Posted December 4, 2004 Report Posted December 4, 2004 But disabling a firewall is NOT a good idea. If you do so, download a file then re-enable immediatly. Although I doubt that it is the firewall causing the problem in this case. If I am wrong and it is indeed thefirewall the a quick check on the makers website should tell you how to overcome the problem without disabling it each time. Let us know how you get on.
Guest element Posted December 5, 2004 Report Posted December 5, 2004 Although I doubt that it is the firewall causing the problem in this case. Theres a small chance that its firewall related, although I doubt it. Its just I remember doing something 2 weeks ago on CRC's and firewalls etc in one of my lectures.... Perhaps in future I should pay attention
