ActiveSync failing to detect C500 Smartphone

I have activesync 3.7.1 running on my Windows XP (service pack 1) machine at work. When I connect my C500 via USB, ActiveSync does not detect it. The windows machine realises new hardware has been attached as I get a baloon message at the bottom-right to say so. The windows machine knows it's my phone too as it mentions C500 so I think the driver is OK.

I have tried reinstalling activesync 3.7.1 but this hasn't helped. I have tried going back to version 3.6, no joy. I have killed the process and restarted it, no help. I have uninstalled the divers, windows reinstalled them, that didn't help. The cable is OK as I have tried it with my digital camera and it's fine.

I could reinstall my windows machine, but that seems a little over the top and is a big waste of my time.

Does anyone have any ideas of anything I could try? I can send some files via bluetooth, but for files over 500k, they just seem to be forgotten by the phone.

The files over 500k BT transfer is a known problem - apparently the last ROM upgrade from Orange fixed it. Sounds like a firewall problem.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have tried switching the firewall on my Windows XP machine off, but that's not changed anything. I have tried switching the firewall back on and allowing as many different types of data through as possible, no joy.

Do you have any others ideas?

When you plug your phone in do you let it install all the drivers? When it is plugged in under Device manager do you see "Windows CE USB devices with Smartphone USB Sync odd it (this should be a new category that appears under Universal Serial Bus Controllers at the same level and with the same icon. If not your drivers have not installed properly.

I have let it install all the drivers. It used to work. Suddenly it stopped.

When I bring up the device manager I see this:

+----------- Windows CE USB devices

|---------------------- Smartphone USB Sync

Note, the Smartphone USB Sync line is not at the same level, but is indented one level. The icon is the same.

OK - so it looks like your PC is recognising the phone OK just activesync isn't.

I assumethat you have checked that "Allow USB connection" is checked under connections in activesync? If so the next thing I'd try is to delete the partnership with the phone not plugged in then try and create a new partnership.

I have the Allow USB connection checked in ActiveSync. Interestingly, when I have the connection settings dialog open in ActiveSync that shows the Allow USB check box and I have the phone connected, the USB status is shown to be connected. When I unplug the phone, the status changes to USB is available. This makes me even more confident that the drivers are OK and that the problem is at the ActiveSync level.

When the phone is connected, ActiveSync's icon is brown in the system tray, the partnership shown is "No partnerships" and it says "Not connected" below the "No partnetships".

Under the File menu, Synchronize down to Delete partnetship are greyed out and I can't select them. The whole of the tools menu is greyed out as well. The Sync, Stop, Explor and Options buttons are also greyed out.

How can I create a new partnership?

Is the "Get Connected" option available? If so, what happens when you try it?

The Get Connected menu item is available and when I select it, it cycles through COm ports 1 to 3 and checks for USB, which is available.

In Activesync on the phone under menu->Options->PC Settings Is your PC listed as the one to use?

Have you tried using a different USB Port on your PC?

The menu -> Options menu item is grayed out, I can't select it. I have tried another USB port and I get the same symptoms.

If Menu-> options is greyed out and you have tried re-installin ActiveSync on the PC, it sounds like the problem could be on the phone in which case the only solution I could think of would be a Hard reset

Thanks to Confucious and everyone else that helped me out in this thread.

I did the hard reset of the phone and everything is now working. Moral of the story, if ActiveSync doesn't detect your phone connected via USB and if none of the menu items under ActiveSync's Option menu item are available, you probably have to hard reset your phone.

Thanks everyone.

I have the same - with my c500 (1 day old :? ).

Did anyone tried to find what is the problem (cause).

Maybe there is some files missing and would be nice to compare folders and find it.

We could avoid hard reset doing all over again :)

In the advanced PC settings in ActiveSync on the phone there is an option to 'enable PC sync using this connection type'. When I got my phone it wasn't set to USB, so could this be the problem? When you do a hard reset it automatically puts it back to its default mode which luckily I didn't have to do! :)

Although I did have lots of other Activesync problems. :(

Yes, knowing this would be really good, but I don't have the time right now. All I remember is that the phone suddenly stopped working. Perhaps it was something I did to it as I was mesing about with it at the time things packed up. If anyone knows what causes this, please post something to this thread. Thanks.
