Can I used a contract sim in a PAYG phone?

Ok this is probably a very daft question but.....

Can I use an existing Orange Contract SIM card in a PAYG phone ?

My contracts not up for 6 months , and my current E200 is driving me to distraction so I'm looking at getting a C500 from the modaco shop.

Will it just work ? Or will the new C500 need unlocking ?

But do you have Orange phone insurance?

No, I went for the insurance with the Car Phone warehouse. At the time I wasn't sure I wanted to sign up for another 12months and it gave me a get out clause after 3.

I supose I could just can the contract via the insurance but I'd then loose my number which is a pain in the ass.
