Phantom Files in Storage?

I am running into a strange problem on my SIM unlocked Audivox SMT 5600. I have a 27.98 MB of integrated storage, but 0 MB available. The strange part is that I have only 12 MB of files in the Storage directory. I should have about 15 MB free.

I even wrote a program in .NET to sum up the total size of all files in that directory and it shows 12 MB. I used High Tech File Manager to browse around the file system and didn't see anything that could be taking up the space.

Here's the other strange thing. The memory is being used up as the phone is just sitting there. If I free up 1 megabyte of RAM by deleting something, within an hour or two, I will have no space left.

I turned of loggin in ActiveSync (although I don't see any log files for it anyway) and I'm not running anything unusal that I know of. How could I be so short on space if I barely have anything on the phone. I got the phone about 3 weeks ago and this problen didnt' start until this weekend. A soft reset didn't help either. I keep getting this annoying low storage space warning.

Any ideas?

restart the phone and try again, there are some applications that are badly designed and eat up free space. if restarting frees up alot of memory you should look to remove the offending app

else you could hard reset and make sure to install everything to the sd card in future

I tried rebooting the phone a few times, and the problem is still there and memory is still disappearing (except that I have zero left right now).

I guess a hard reset would work, but I'm trying to avoid reloading. Also, I can't be sure this won't happen again if I can't figure out why it is doing it.

The strange thing is that the missing 15 MB isn't in the file system. That's the part that blows me away.

Ok.. Here's how it played out. I couldn't find that missing space on my device. It was also strange that I have do "My Documents" folders in the same parent folder (they both linked to the same place).

I finally broke down and rebuilt it. Before I did that, I ran a little backup program I wrote myself just to get a copy of everything. I used the phone reset program that ships with the SMT 5600 and that seemed to do the trick. I am back to normal.

Glad to hear you got it working, but:

a little backup program I wrote myself just to get a copy of everything.

I'm sure lots of people would be interested in this. Care to share it with us?
