Seeing files on PC from my phone

Does anyone know of a way of being able to see/open files stored on my PC using my C500 over a bluetooth connection?

I can active sync with no probs but would be good to browse a shared folder on my computer and access files eg MP3's etc.

Any thoughts?

ruttensoft (the people who did the homescreen designer) have a media player that works when your phone is sync'd with activesync. You can set up playlists and then control which playlist plays and stuff from your phone. Works pretty well.

That would work for mp3's. I dont think there is any way for other files.

Yeah already got Media Remote from Ruttensoft, bit of pain setting up those play lists, and it doesn't do want I want.

What I really what I want to do is be able to play/stream MP3s FROM my PC TO my phone over bluetooth allowing me to either walk around the house with headphones or plug in the phone to the stereo downstairs and listen to tunes - gotta be a good thing for parties etc.

Also be able to browse my PC from my Phone and select files as needed, like you would over a network or even iTunes etc.

I have been looking into Slimserver to stream music to my phone but think I've been getting problems because my computer is hidden behind a router so I can not connect to my own IP address if that makes sense, I'm not much good with networks etc?

But again that has the problem of going to the PC to select the tracks which is never gonna impress my mates, surely there must be a simpler way.

It seems all the technology is there or am I just asking too much?

I've done this - it's pretty straightfoward actually

* Get bluetooth setup (this took me ages, but there are plenty of guides out there)

* Connect the phone via BT activesync, and make sure the passthru is turned on in activesync on your PC (Options->Rules->Pass Through->Connection:The Internet)

* Download and install Windows Media Encoder (WME9 for 2K/XP WME7 for 98/ME) - it's free

* Run WME, select "Broadcast a Live event" from the popup wizard (I'm describing WME9 here, 7 is slightly different, but I'm sure you can figure it out)

* Tick the Audio box, and select your soundcard from the dropdown, then click Next

* select "Pull from the encoder", click Next

* pick a connection port (the default 8080 should be fine, unless your PC's already running a webserver)

* note down the "url for internet connections", Click Next

* Select "CD quality audio", Click Next

* Click Finish

* you'll get a warning about IP access (if you're on the intenet anyone can connect to your PC and listen to your music stream, so you might want to change security settings later)

the wizard should now be over, and you'll just have an empty looking WME window

* Click the green "Start Encoding" button

* Minimize WME, fire up winamp, (or whatever you want to play music), find some music and start it playing

* Look back in WME, you should see the volume bars at the left dancing with the music - if not click the mixer button and try different sources (the right option can be called "Stereo mixer" or "what you hear" depending on your sound card)

* Once you can see that WME is getting the sound, go back to your phone, and fire up Windows Media

* select Menu->Open URL

* enter the "url for internet connections" that you noted down earlier (i.e. http://192.168.0.1:8080 )

* hit Play

All going well, your phone will buffer for a few seconds, then start playing - there'll usually be a 5-10 second lag between the PC making the sound and it coming out of your phone, due to the encoding and buffering at each end, but I'm sure this is liveable with!

In WME you can now save the settings, to save you going through the wizard each time

Also if you've got a webcam you can set it to broadcast a webcam video stream to your phone, which is good for showing off!

Very Cool Benjymous.

I just set this up in about about 5 mins and have got streaming Audio and my Webcam coming though on my SPV C500 in the lounge, from my laptop in my bedroom :)

Nice work.

Cheers, Dez

Just tried but don't get a URL - it just says (Could not detect) - The joys of having a decent firwall!

I'll have to have a play with it and see if I can get it working.

If you know your PC's local ip address you should be able to use that

As long as your home PC is visable from the outside internet, and WME isn't blocked by any firewalls, then yes, you'll be able to do that - just put in your home machine's internet IP address

You can view it from WMP on a PC too - of course *anyone* will be able to

You'll probably rack up a gigantic GPRS bill though, if you're trying to view it over the airwaves!

Do I need WME to browse the web via the PC's internet connection?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I tried to use my local IP address and get the following alert (ie. error) message: "An unknown error 0X80072746 has occurred." Any insight?
