C500 Radiation Output - mildly concerned

Hi guys, never posted before but have been spurred into action by what just happened.

I am sitting about 7 feet away from a Sky Digital-equipped TV playing MTV and a few minutes ago my new C500 rang. From the moment the phone started ringing to when I hung up, the Sky signal distorted badly, immediately returning to normal when the call ended.

I have seen this happen before with electronic equipment, especially with older phones (my Nokia bananaphone from 1998 was a big culprit), but not from a range of 2 metres. I just tried making an outgoing call with the SPV and the same happened, but there was no interference on Sky when I used a spare SonyEricsson K700i.

I searched this forum for the word radiation and read previous posts that say the C500 has fairly low levels of radiation output. My experience massively contravenes this and is extremely worrying. I like the phone but am now seriously considering calling Orange for a return / swap for another model.

Any thoughts?

Well radiation and interference aren't the same thing.

I've not tried it, so I can't comment on the typical distance a C500 needs to be to avoid bugging a TV or stereo, but 2m does seem like too far.

It might be that the signal is boosted by your phone if it can't get good reception, and that is why it's doing that over such long distances.

What was your signal strength like?

Does it do it in places where you are getting good signal?

and is your ariel cable shielded? or your sky box might be doing random things

you could try using ferrite blocks at the tv end to clean the rf signal

Hey guys - thanks for the responses.

My signal is full. I know that radiation and interference are not the same thing but one is symptomatic of the other.

I have no idea how shielded the ariel cable is, but the Sky box is otherwise behaving normally - even when a call is made by the SonyEricsson K700i right up close.

In your opinion, does this warrant a support call to HTC?

different phones cause differing interference with different things, landlines, speakers, tv's, montitors. to be honest if i got concerend everytime my phone interfered with an eletrical applicance id have no hair left...

Is your K700 on the same network as your c500? if not maybe your c500 is not getting a very good signal so boosting it's own signal as a result?

Is your sky box connected to your telly thru scart or coax? If coax this could be a problem....?

I think you ruled out the sheilding due to the fact this only occurs with one phone. Check cables anyway.

Could be anything maybe your phone could do with a reset if 'stuck' on high power (if possible???)

My TV doesa that when my wife puts on her hairdryer! Does that mean there's radiation coming out of it?? :( Come to think of it, that could explain alot!! :)

Not really :?

Interferance can be caused by electrical spikes and transients in the supply or by RF generated by poorly shielded devices.

This does not mean you are nuking yourself everytime you power on your phone.

Your problem is more likely (as suggested above) caused by poor shieding of your cabling from your sky box to your TV and is probably happening on your TV and not the sky box as you are presuming.

As for comparison between a Nokia and the C500 Nokias have always been high on the interference side.

To finish off I would not call HTC as I do not think you will get anywhere with them :)

You'll find most baby monitors emit twice as much EM radiation as an average mobile phone.

Actually yeah :(

Heat radiation from the element heating up. :(

I noticed way more "interference" using AT&T service than T-Mobiles. Maybe AT&T is trying to kill me :)

Since I've had my SPV 500 my TV keeps de-tuning itself from NTL Cable and going to a blue screen every hour or so!! I have to constantly re-tune my tv.

Guess it could be a coincidence but it doesn't happen when the phones off.

I would give it a try, I have very little interference from my C500 on any electrical devices, except the car stereo and that is only noticeable when I am playing MP3s from my phone through a cassette adapter and the volume is turned way up.
