Guest benjymous Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 Probably should be posted in news.. Read the full press release Download it here Oslo, Norway - December 22, 2004 Opera Software today released a technical preview (TP) of the Opera browser for Windows Mobile. Smartphone 2003 users can now enjoy the benefits of a faster and better Internet experience from their mobile phones. This development supports operators' need for choice in OS distribution, meeting their customers' demands for an exceptional full Web browser on their mobile phones. Following the August 2004 announcement of Opera's new development for the Windows Mobile Platform, a silent TP was released on October 14, 2004. Though the first TP was not officially announced, users responded enthusiastically with more than 43,000 downloads. MS Smartphone users were quick with positive feedback. One user stated in an Opera forum, "I tested on a large page...it's faster than anything I've seen before." Opera 7.60 for Windows Mobile TP is based on Opera's latest core technology, proving that Opera's embedded deliveries are in synch with desktop browser developments. With Opera 7.60 for Windows Mobile, users will enjoy speed, smooth usability and rich content display as they access the full Internet, creating a Web experience unlike any other available for Smartphone 2003 devices. Opera for Windows Mobile supports all major Web standards, including CSS2, DOM 2, javascript and more. "We want to show Smartphone users what Opera is capable of right away," said Jon S. von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera Software. "We have released a TP for our development on the Windows Mobile platform, so that we can expand testing and get feedback on user experiences. The 7.60-based browser is unprecedented in speed and usability and we are certain that not only users will be thrilled but operators will benefit by offering their subscribers full access to the Web." In addition, Windows Mobile users will benefit from Opera's renowned SSR (Small-Screen Rendering) technology. SSR eliminates the need for horizontal scrolling to view a page, providing an unmatched browsing experience for MS Smartphone users. Availability Today's release is available for all MS Smartphone 2003 devices and can be downloaded here. Users must be aware that a TP should be used for preview purposes only, as it is not a final product and does not contain all the features that are expected with the final release. Today's release will expire on March 31, 2005, and users will not be able to register it.
Guest squall Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 I had decided against posting this in news as its basically just another beta version. When the full opera version is launched i will be sure to post it in news :)
Guest fozzie Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 "Just another beta version" eh? This has two major additions; bookmarks and multiple window browsing - superb! Surely a newsworthy item :) Changes since Technical Preview 1: Added "Bookmarks" sub-menu for adding and managing bookmarks. Added support for multiple windows: A list of open windows is available from the Windows menu or by pressing 9. The document title is now used as window title. Open windows can be cycled by using the shortcuts 0 and 8. Next Window and Previous Window are added to the Windows menu. Shortkey 0 is assigned to Next Window and shortkey 8 to Previous Windows. "Bookmarks" and "History" folders are accessible by scrolling down from the "Go to URL" input field. URLs of list items are displayed when the item name is focused. When hovering a URL, the left arrow can be used to set focus on the edit field. Improved password entering. Default minimum font size set to 9 pixels. Improved spatial navigation. Fixed problem where status on progress bar was not reset. The progress bar showed information from the last page visited instead of the new page loading. Dialog added for password and certificate handling. Added javascript prompt dialog. Fixed problem with reloading Opera after opening another program and then going back to Opera. Various stability fixes.
Guest nobznss Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 Is this that much better than IE?
Guest fozzie Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 Is this that much better than IE? Compared to IE maybe not BUT compared to PIE, which is on my C500, then yes, it's far better. Does PIE have: a. Full screen mode? b. Web page optimisation? c. Accelerated web browsing? d. Multiple window browsing? Why don't you try it and find out for yourself?
Guest chucky.egg Posted December 22, 2004 Report Posted December 22, 2004 They're getting closer! The final thing could be pretty good! Posted from my SmartPhone!
Guest Ben Horley Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 I've just got an SPV C500 and downloading Opera was one of the first things I did - It is way better than IE. Just the way it handles pages, browsing is actually do-able on my SPV. I'd even go as far to say that it's better than IE on my ipaq with half the screen real estate.
Guest Confucious Posted January 4, 2005 Report Posted January 4, 2005 I have tried this again (I tried the first version) and am still having the same problem. Maybe it's just me but I can't see what's selecteed on the screen and so have major problems taking options. I'm sure it can't be as dificult to use as I'm finding it, am I just being even more stupid that usual?
