Guest captain9fingers Posted December 23, 2002 Report Posted December 23, 2002 After 3 days of use I have had enough of my SPV I am returning it to Orange under thier 14 day phone return policy in favour of a Nokia brick (7650). I have included a letter in the box I am sending back in the hope that Orange will address these problems (If lots of people send them back it will probably give them added incentive) here is a copy of the letter I have sent back with the phone (I ran out of printer ink so my version is hand written and differs slightly) ---------------------------------------------------------- Dear Orange, Listed below are a few of the problems I had with the SPV Phone frequently and randomly freezes/hangs Too frequent to pinpoint to any area or action Several times I had to pull the battery out because the phone completely locked out - one time I did this and lost several contacts out of my contact list. In the 3 days I owned the phone I had to hard reset twice because after the phone hung I was unable to restart it even after pulling the battery out, causing complete data loss of the data that I had added. When navigating the phone menus it would pause for a few seconds then resume if during those few seconds I pressed any buttons it would then perform those actions upon returning to normal function causing me to perform actions I didn't want too. When talking on the phone it frequently cut out the conversation causing a few seconds of silence then it would resume resulting in me losing parts of the conversation and having to backtrack. I set some PCM WAV files as tones - 1 for a ring tone and another for SMS every other action I opted for none (silent) I received an SMS and it played the ring tone WAV rather than the SMS WAV so I checked to make sure I had set the right WAV to the correct action and I had but the phone just decided to play the wrong one. The Action button has moved to the left and does not sit centre. No ability to close programs after use (ie games like rebound) after opening a few programs the phone gets really really slow, you have to reboot to resume normal speed. Sometimes when taking a photo it would say "camera not connected" even though the camera was clicked firmly into place. Poor battery life (lasts about 10 hours). After reading articles in http://www.modaco.com/smartphone and at the newsgroup microsoft.public.smartphone I realise my problems are not unique I have returned it because it is just not reliable enough for my use. I hope that the information I have provided and what is available at the above newsgroup and forum will help in getting these problems ironed out. If you would like to contact me for any other information I can give you about this phone feel free to do so, you have my details on record. Regards, Jason ---------------------------------------------------------- good luck to those of you that are keeping yor SPV's hopefully some software updates will resolve many of the issues. When the updates are available I may be over my 14 days so I'm not going to risk it. Bye Bye
Guest janagan Posted December 23, 2002 Report Posted December 23, 2002 Hehe nothing is perfect, and when microsoft is involved u can double that. This phone is so brilliant i dont mind the occasional hang ups which only results when u r out of memory, so i simply turn it off and on after heavy use. But i never had half of ur complaints, and its been about 3 weeks since i bought my phone. My first choice was Sendo phones, but since they backed out, i had my eyes stuck between 7650 and SPV. 7650 is too much a brick (by size) so i ended up with SPV. The only thing that spv lacks compared to 7650 is a bluetooth device. And for u going for a 7650 did u check the memory specifications (3.6MB and u cant add anymore) ITS PANTS.
Guest ukmailserver Posted December 23, 2002 Report Posted December 23, 2002 I too experienced most of these problems you list below. After much messing around I got a new phone from Carphonewarehouse. It took the lady in the shop about 1 1/2 hours to get the phone replaced as Orange did not have a clue about how the carry out the proceedure as I needed a new sim card and I was not prepared to wait overnight to get it activated. Orange don't know their @rse from their elbow. Every time I rang orange about a problem I would get a different excuss / reason why it did what it did. Come on Orange. Even if your operators lied to me to keep me happy so I would not tie the phone to a rock and drop it in the Thames at least make them all sing from the same songsheet. When they are all guessing and fumbling for answers I feel I know more about the phone than they do and I'm a binman!!! Since then I have had no problems. (two days Wehay) After the phone was swapped I contacted Orange and they did admit the phone had a fault as they done some sort of online diagnostics and it showed and error. I wish the online backup / restore put back all my ringtones and home page to the way it was. Guest Shire29 Posted December 23, 2002 Report Posted December 23, 2002 I can only express my experience that Orange support has been very, very good for me. I have phoned on 4 seperate occassions and each time my problem was resolved, even if the Technician had to go and ask for advice from someone else. Also though apart from the GPRS & MMS updates all but one of my probelms have been addressed here in this forum. That one problem is only resolvable with a new handset, however I have got mine working just the way I want it so I'm willing to put up with the minor problem. I work part time in a mobile phone shop and see people have probs with all makes/models of phones, including the 7650. So much technology crammed into these phones nowadays, and they don't just sit on the desk they get thrown around, dropped etc. etc. I have had no more probs with mine than some people get with their trusted Nokias. Sadly the more u want from a phone the more u have that can go wrong. Cheers, Shire PS the SPV knocks socks of the 7650, although there is more software available for the Nokia.
Guest DJHope Posted December 23, 2002 Report Posted December 23, 2002 ohhhhhh, could this be a mistake updates ready and waiting suposidly on the 23rd for denmark (TODAY) im guessing we wont be far behind, thats goinna hurt if it fixes all the issues you raise!!!!!!
Guest captain9fingers Posted January 3, 2003 Report Posted January 3, 2003 Hi, Just an update I got my 7650 and its fantastic I'm soooooo glad I took that bag of s*** SPV back. Symbian is a hell of a lot more stable than windows and there is tons of software available and there is no certification to hold development back I have a gameboy emulator installed and it rocks as well as java support for loads of other games, the built in camera is good quality and it taking a picture is so easy. Microsoft can go **** themselves for releasing an early alpha version of their software on the SPV. my only disapointment was the fact I never got the chance to put a hammer through the thing (believe me I felt like it a few times) My advice If your SPV is less than 14 days old then take it back as there are far better phones out there, even if the 7650 is not your thing there are some good phones coming out soon. oh and please dont flame me as I feel I am justified in slagging the SPV off with all the hasstle I had with the crappy thing
Guest DJHope Posted January 3, 2003 Report Posted January 3, 2003 Nice :D Glad to see you like your SPV, i actually really like my fone and you have to understand that alot of people on here do. Id miss an mp3 player too much, didnt see one on the 7650 and 4mb! Just exactly how can i get more than doom and a few piccys on it with 4 mb.
