That's right...Does anyone know if the program that uses Palm organisers as a remote control for TV, Video, etc can be compatible with SPV?

That would be SO COOL!

Pocket PC ones may be able to be ported... but it will definitely require mods. All of these I have ever seen show a set of buttons on the touch screen. For Smartphone you would have to tie the buttons to the keypad. Also, dunno whether the IR Port has a standard interface between Pocket PCs and Smartphones. But porting should be do-able and it would be cool. Take control of all your mates TV's with your phone...

Not wanting to put down a nice idea, but wasn't it mentioned that the range of the IR port on the SPV was too low to be of real use?

Has that been tested though? Cos my old Handspring Visor had poo IR range but was still somewhat workable.

I suppose that the IR range must be at least a metre or 2, otherwise it would be no use for anything, although I don't think it would be optimized for more than a 2 metre transmission.

Saying that though, an old Nokia I had had to be stuck right up the ass of my laptop before it would do anything !! so maybe the SPV is the same ? (not that the SPV can be compared to any Nokia !)

This has been asked a few times in the past.

The biggest question is range of the SPV IR but

I did see somewhere on the web that there was a way to boost the signal ;)

This was only for PDAs and I think it was Palm but don't quote me on that.

It was a few days ago now but it could give someone and idea how to :?

do it for our phones.

I think you're right there...It could be a bit too complicated to make modifications to the PDA software, and it still might not work for this phone....Somebody do something about it! Where has all the genius gone?

i'm going to start developing one tonight!

don't hold your breath though - it took me four hours to work out the crappy unicode handling ;)

ive got as far as flashing the ir on&off ;)

What reqs would people have?

fully learning/programmable, or simple 1-4-all type magic codes?

Fully learning would be the best IMHO, but maybe just get it working with a few standard codes first so you can see if it's practical to use (ie range etc) and then build from there. Actually, wouldn't learning be easier because you haven't got to program thousands of codes? Well, if you can get anything going it would be fantastic!

I tried the Infrared Remote Controller program on my Ipaq Pocket PC.

It does not work unless you are about 12 inches from the TV.

Somehow i don't think it will work too well with the SPV, but if it does then great !

This can vary from device to device. My Ipaq 3630 works from around 2m away for instance. So did my Visor Dx. I don't know what Ipaq model you have, I think one of the later ones is known for pathetic IR range, that's more an exception than the rule (2m seems the norm). Of course, my Pronto works from the other side of the flat, with no direct line of sight (have to practice the rebounds on the walls ;)), but then, it is a real remote control...

We never know until we tried, the SPV might actually have a powerful beam...

PS: 2m = 78.74 inches for those with weird units

Yeah I second that; my Ipaq 3630 is almost as usefull as the tv remote, coz it works from all the chairs in the room. Also though, beaming between the 3630 and the SPV is a nightmare, as the slightest thing seems to disrupt transmission. This could be for a number of reasons:

* The IR reciever on either device might be poor.

* The IR LED range on eather device might be poor.

* The beaming software is crappy.

The beaming SW is crappy. It hardly works.

I think that the IR range on the SPV will is OK, because I looked through my camcorder at the device while i beamed something and the bulbs of the spv looked the same brightness as the 3630. (BTW u can see IR through some camcorders as white).

Anyway cant wait for the software! Yet another way to show off the phone!

I got it too open, but it was too big on the small screen to do anything, as it was written for pocketpc's

I read in Orange Answers More Questions (on orange website/spv) that IR emitter on the phone is not compatible with the receivers on consumer electronics.. But I think this is just a load of bull!! Come on someone, we're dying to see your masterpiece in the area of Smart Virtual Remotes.. or something along the lines...
