Charger and USB

I used to keep my previous phone on charge near my front door. With the SPV, it needs to charge next to the PC on the docking station, which means walking up a flight of stairs and back down again to get the phone.

Is there a way to charge the phone using the USB cable going to the PC so that the charger can be put somewhere else away from the PC?

I saw Orange mentioned they were bringing out a "USB charging cable" - is this a replacement cable to the docking station that means the mains charger unit isn't necessary and can be used elsewhere?

You can already use USB sync and charge cable for an XDA - i got one (with a car adapter) and it works great...

Another alternative is to use a 5.3V nokia fast charger (tall thin ones, not the cube ones) plugged into the charging adapter - which works fine, tho might invalidate your warranty if you fired your phone and admitted how :?

Buy a sync-n-charge cable for the O2 XDA. The XDA and SPV are made by the same company so chargers are compatible.

This car adapter mentioned is a good idea, havent seen one in the UK, but its $10 in the States and provides a USB-style port for the USB plug on the sync & charge lead (25 quid from Expansys) to allow it to connect to the cigarette lighter.

Glad to hear it works

Forgive me for stating the obvious here but you don't need to put the SPV in the cradle to charge the phone at all. The charger plugs straight into the phone with that little adapter that came with the phone so you can take the charger wherever you like and only need to take it to the PC when you want to use it like I do :D

This doesn't cost me anything extra to do either

Yeah, but while it's on the cradle the battery life does down even faster than usual so the cradle's quite useless without the power lead.

Since USB is capable of charging the phone it would have been nice if the supplied cradle did this :-(

I agree the cradle is pretty useless without the power lead but I really can't see any major issue with this. Yes it would be nice if the cradle used USB to charge the phone but I can only assume there must be a reason why it isn't being used in that way. The XDA also requires the power connection to the cradle to recharge so far as I know.

Let's be honest it doesn't take much effort to just take the power lead to the PC when you wish to use the phone in the cradle does it

Then when you're finished just take the charger with you. I personally don't see any big deal in doing this :D

Well I work in an office and keep the cradle there to sync with my office PC. I also want to keep the charger at home to charge overnight.

Currently that means either not synching the phone on the cradle much (cause battery will die), or carrying the charger in and out of work all day. Also if I get a lot of calls that day it would be nice to charge it on the cradle. :-(

And since there's no SPV accessories out yet there's not much else I can do. Yeah I know the XDA stuff works with the SPV, but supposing you didn't know this.

Fair enough :D I guess an alternative is to perhaps wait for the new battery which I believe is due this month. An improved battery life plus spare battery could be an alternative answer :(

I'm sure there will also be more accessories due out soon enough too but in the meantime it is frustrating :(
