Orange certification is a shambles

What really angers me is that the SPV/Smartphone platform has the potential to have a *huge* streetlevel fanbase through people having access to a great piece of kit, and the tools available to make it do what everybody wants.

There's a freely available Software Development Kit and lots of people willing to develop for it - experience coders and people who are putting their toes in the water for the first time.

All this should add up to a vibrant development scene that will provide the killer apps that could sell Orange Contracts and SPV/SmartPhone as fast as the Playstation/Amiga/Spectrum.

But no, Orange want to maintain a stranglehold on the certification - not because of security concerns (as we've already got the XDA, Trio etc and there's a two-tier security rights model anyway), but because the market for downloadable games is predicted to be a high growth area in the next year or so.

Why don't Orange take the slightly longer-term view and see that the applications will sell the handsets (and contracts of course), instead of imposing a tax on every application written?

As soon as there are some competing SmartPhone devices (on other Networks) in the marketplace with no certification clause, this narrow-minded certification stance will be dropped like a hot potato - because the SPV will be obvious crippleware in comparision.

So why don't Orange look ahead now, instead of grabbing pennies and alienating all the developer talent - take advantage of being first-to-market and get all those fantastic programs on the SPV and be seen like the innovative company that they've always wanted to be.

Orange should help the developer community - it's these people that will make their product a success. Sony saw this, Microsoft see this, why do Orange refuse to open their eyes?

Anyone hear me????

Couldn't we ALL contact Orange over the course of a couple of days next week - bombard them with complaints about this and suggestions of how they can keep us as customers and SPV owners?

We'd need a list of the points we should make, and the right menu to choose on 150 (cust service) so they spend all day for two days just handling queries from SPV users.

We could have a thread on the forum where we all place our names after we have made the call, and where we can share the comments we may get from customer service.

What do you all think? Anyone up for coming up with a list of stuff we should ask?

Let's use people power and get Orange moving on this thing!

I rang them up and gave them a verbal bollocking, and the rep rang the certification centre who told him it was "Microsoft's fault."

I cant see how orange can do this, we are using Microsoft software, how can orange justify telling us what software we can and cannot use, it should be microsoft that controlles certification, at least that way we would see some progress as they will want to premote the OS as much as possible, more programs means more interest.

I agree, we should all bombard Orange with complaints about the Certification, and the suggested price of GPRS, if they dont do somthing about that people just wont use it, who wants to pay £4 per MB?

this is typical MS who wants to block other non MS software like AOL Chat or ICQ Chat to be installed. I also believe that it is in orange's interest to try and lock in their user as much as they can...... I am selling my SPV and wait for another open Smartphone like P800 hopefully

The P800 is going to have the same certification issues, also I hope you have been going to the gym because the P800 is BIG, HEAVY brick.....

By the way, Orange are the problem not MS.
