IRDA -> GPRS

Hiya everyone,

I wonder if someone can help me before i have to beat my head against orange uk tech support.

I want to connect my win98se latop via IRDA with my SPV to get GPRS internet access.

I have had a search of the forums and quite a few people have posted the setup with init strings and the gprs settings etc.

I have a problem though when i goto modem link on the spv and activate irda, i point it at the laptop and it connects over irda as a smartphone.

But it doesnt detect it as a modem. If i try to install a standard modem and select the virtual irda port it doesnt work.

Any ideas whats wrong.

Thanks

When you say you try to install a standard modem, and it doesn't work.

What actually happens. Is the option for Virtual IR com port there?

Do you get an error message?

i tried installing a modem via control panel. i selected 56k v90 standard modem. i forget how but i chose virtual infrared port. when i tried to connect with it says port already open.

Select a standard modem (Standard 19200bps modem) and install it to the Virtual IR port.

If you have WinXP you don't need to install the modem as windows will do this for you.

If you have Win 2000 make sure you have SP3 (Service Pack 3) installed.

Also make sure your IR port on the computer is not running to fast. 4Mbps is too fast - reduce it to 38400.

Ok i think this is a non fixable problem. Until MS release a driver for the spv as a modem.

I'll describe in full the process i have tried.

I have a win98 laptop with IRDA, i have a t68 that has worked as a GPRS modem over infrared in the past but it has a driver.

- I did a clean install of win98SE.

- I checked the IRDA was working correctly.

- I installed a modem (tried both 56k and Standard 19200bps modem)

- I set it to use virtual infrared port (modem over infrared)

- I set up an internet conn to orange GPRS(using the init strings)

- On the SPV i went to

>programs>accessories>modem link>ircomm>activate

- I lined it up with the laptop it connects and recognises the device as a smartphone.

- I click to connect. it says dialing and then says failed, check settings etc.

- I get a pop up box that says com port open or in use.

I appreciate your help on this, it sounds like XP might have more robust connectivity. i may have to think about upgrading or wait for the driver for win98SE.

Unless you can suggest anything else?

Sounds like you have an application running in the background keeping the port open.

1. Re-boot the machine and try again.

2. Press CTRL/ALT/DEL

This should bring up the close program box up. End task everything except "systray" and "explorer".

3. Then try and connect again.

4. Talking from experience if you have anything else in that list ending with "tray" this is probable keeping the port open (polling it).

Nokia software will do this also Active Sync and Digital Camera sw.

Props to you buddy :D , i got it sorted as you said activsync holds the port open.

thing is though can i stop activesync from sitting in memory/systray at startup.

i used to know how to do this with regedit but i dont remember the location anymore.

at the moment i have to kill the app with task manager.

Anyhow thanks again.

Go to start -->Run

Or, even better, download 'Startup Control Panel' from MLIN.net - this has to be the best app ever, together with his app that watches for things being ADDED to your startup and asks for your permission (which ActiveSync does all the time)!
