Guest sahli Posted January 1, 2003 Report Posted January 1, 2003 I have purchased an SPV with Orange and I regret. I am selling mine on the market and keep my nokia 7650 for another view weeks until P800 is coming. Main reason why I got fed up: 1. lock in to ORange Service (not only Sim but also websites , apps, etc.) 2. no other Pocket PC apps can be installed without Orange's blessing (certificate). Total control. This p... me of most. 3. no Java (MS issue) 4. pure SMS application, no multipl language T9 support, no inserts of pictures, no indication of mess. length, no find number or email to be saved to a contact or do a new contact within the body text. 5. weak 'to do' implementation 6. no bluetooth 7. no view image apps without purchasing third party (IA Album) 8. no doc viewers 9. no viewers of email attachements 10. no support of email attachements 11. no handling of multiple email accounts (big issues for me) 12. weak MMS 13. no bluetooth 14. poor battery standby there are more, but those are my most important ones. And yes I am a business user. Be honest, what is your opinion? Let orange now....
Guest budda Posted January 1, 2003 Report Posted January 1, 2003 Bluetooth listed twice? You would have known it didn't have bluetooth from the beginning - before you purchased it. As for the software side of things - i agree it sucks. I think i might take mine back on saturday for a refund until it either gets better or something else is released.
Guest sahli Posted January 1, 2003 Report Posted January 1, 2003 right about bluetooth it is listed twice..... SW sucks still though..... refund would be cool, but I am not sure they do that.
Guest budda Posted January 1, 2003 Report Posted January 1, 2003 If it is within 14 days of purchase Orange honor the refund. Like you suggested I also phoned Orange and complained about the sheer lack of functionality in the software and they said that I was free to return the handset to where I purchased it from to get a refund.

And yes I am a business user. Be honest, what is your opinion? Let orange now.... You are not locked into Orange service in anyway other than the sim, you can visit non-orange websites, use non-orange apps etc. The certification issues will be overcome in time. The only time i need Java is first thing on a morning, i can live without it on the SPV, no doubt it will come in time though. Your SMS issues will most likely be changed with future upgrades from Microsoft, you cant expect perfection for a first release OS. Bluetooth cards are comming soon, for the cost of this phone you cant seriously expect to have everything? You can view images without IA Album, use IE, like windows!, the same goes for docs and email attachments. Email attachments will come eventually, just be patient. As for the multiple email accounts, it would be nice, however i can live with just one for now. Its only a seconday source of reciept for me. EZ are constantly upgrading the MMS appls I think they have changed the batteries, mine lasts a day and a half of constant use, or about 3- 4 days standby, might be worth talking to orange about that one. Your complaints are mainly issues with software, i think it will be your loss if you send the phone back and buy a house brick. One of the key features of this phone is that it can be upgraded, and Microsoft are always good for product updates, maybe not as fast as we would all like but at least we know they will be updated. Id put up with the problems you have at the moment, this is the most powerful phone on the market atm, no nokia can compare.
Guest Wlodek Posted January 1, 2003 Report Posted January 1, 2003 I understand the disappointment, but ... 1. Orange Service - you know that Orange locks its SIM. Websites - this is simply not true, it comes with a few 'favorites' set up, but that's all. Apps. - yes, but you raise it in (2) 2. .. agreed 3. Not a real concern for me, but you knew it was MS you were buying, didn't you? 4. (a) pure SMS application, Can you clarify this, please? (:D no multipl language T9 support Sort of. There are two 'Englishes', German and French. I wouldn't mind Polish, but hey ... :-) © no inserts of pictures, Now this is called an MMS if I read the manual correctly, and it is there. Unless I missed something again. (d) no indication of mess. length, .. agreed fully. Very unhelpful. (e) no find number or email to be saved to a contact or do a new contact within the body text. Could you clarify this please? 5. weak 'to do' implementation Agreed, not brilliant but this is a matter of taste. OK for some, clearly. I need more too, so I'll fork out a tenner for the 3rd party S/W. 6. no bluetooth You knew that before you bought, didn't you? I miss it too. 7. Agreed, plain greedy/lazy/unfinished. 8,9,10 - essentially one issue: you want Pocket Office (or at least viewers). I do too. There is hope it will come. 11. Agreed fully, but this is probably coming soon. 12. In what way? I find it a bit awkward, but in my line of business this is not crucial at all. If you say 'weak' and want it fixed, maybe more detail would be useful. 14. It is awful indeed. there are more, but those are my most important ones. And yes I am a business user.
Guest tomdbomb61 Posted January 1, 2003 Report Posted January 1, 2003 SORRY BUT HOLD ON A MINUTE!!!!!!! any1 out there with an ounce of brain power can see that the SPV has no rival and is in a class of its own. u cant compare it other nokias etc cus it isnt a effin nokia!!!! yeh the nokia camera fone fone has a camera, which is shite, but does it have mp3 player? MSN MESSENGER! surely thats a gud enuf reason to buy ne fone! n as for bluetooth if u did a bit of research before you brought the SPv u wud have realised it doesnt come with blueooth. derrrrrrr if u wanted bluetooth why did u buy the SPV ??? r u stupid??? did ut hink u cud magically use bluetooth with it!?! ive had my sv for 3 weeks n i think it is literaly the best hing sinced sliced bread. i think u people expect everything to be just perfect first time. n everything to be exactly how u want it! silly really cus ull always find bugs with any fone you buy! u expect to much !!!! FOR THE PRICE OF THE FONE!! sorry just needed to come to rescue of the mighty SPV!!! it seems that every1 here is slating it! we cant have that!!!
Guest sahli Posted January 2, 2003 Report Posted January 2, 2003 you seem not to have a lot of expectation in a windows phone. sorry for that. but the fact that no other apps can be installed (yes we have a cert issue with orange) and no other IM can be installed (ICQ or AOL) because of lock in of MS and Orange it may be a good phone but the political game behind is very obvious. Well and there are few issues which have been solved in almost all phones, SW related, but will be fixed over time I am sure. The political issue sucks

Well and there are few issues which have been solved in almost all phones, SW related, but will be fixed over time I am sure. The political issue sucks Those are valid points but can we also remember that this phone has only been out for a month and a half now. How many games were available for the PS2 at go live, how many games were available for the XBox at go live. The point of a platform like this is that it is easily extendable but you have to give the product some time in the market before the software will become available. Yes Orange Certification is not helping but once they have a system in place for certifying software you'll see a lot more come out. I think the likes of AOL/Yahoo etc might just be able to spare the $300 they need to certify their messenger clients don't you? So, at the end of the day, we all know what the SPV has now. If your not happy with that feel free to not buy one for 6-12 months when it has everything else you desire. I don't think you'll find an alternative phone providing all the features your asking for in the market right now either.
Guest xanadu Posted January 2, 2003 Report Posted January 2, 2003 Main reason why I got fed up: 1. lock in to ORange Service (not only Sim but also websites , apps, etc.) 2. no other Pocket PC apps can be installed without Orange's blessing (certificate). Not true 2. Buy a Pocket PC 3. We don't need Java 4. SMS is great, supported with Photomessaging, no problem. 5. Not an issue 6. Bluetooth on the way, if you really need it ! 7. Most agree IA Album full version should have been supplied. 8. Not required. 9. Not essential 10. Repeat of 9 above. 11. Can be done if you change settings. 12. MMS works fine ! 13. Repeated 6 as above. 14. Battery could be better, but that's why we have the charger ! Conclusion : Show me a phone that can do everything you want in the same size package. ??? What's wrong ??? Can't find one ??? SPV is a great phone for what it does now, and there is no competition.
Guest Spanky Posted January 2, 2003 Report Posted January 2, 2003 I love my SPV to bits, yeah it's got a couple of (minor) bugs that are currently being looked at by Orange & MS (see Paul's Announcement). Top phone, nothing else comes close to it's capabilities, Nokia's are common and therefore boring. The SPV is the first of a new wave of phones that WILL storm the market over the next year or so. Drop the Nokia stigma and stand out with a gadget that makes everyone who sees it go "Ooooooh, what's that then? Can I have a look? ... Wow... Cool ..."
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 2, 2003 Report Posted January 2, 2003 The only Nokia close to being equal and in some cases better is the 9210i which has a seperate camera which is IR enabled to communicate with the phone. Great phone but who likes to carry a house brick with them??? At the end of the day SPV rocks until the next new thing comes round the corner and we could all wait for the next best thing forever so buy the phone and upgrade when you feel the need.
Guest DJHope Posted January 2, 2003 Report Posted January 2, 2003 but the fact that no other apps can be installed (yes we have a cert issue with orange) and no other IM can be installed (ICQ or AOL) because of lock in of MS and Orange Even the Sony Erikson p800 will have certification READ THE POSTS! I imagine the networks got very nervious about xda/ipaq/7650 equipment and told the mobile phone manufacturers to sort it. Oh and the whole java thing, java requires a Virtual Machine (which we will no doubt see over time) this produces an overhead, dont think id really be intrested in slower apps. Ohhhh and the messaging thing just read another thread which says that jabbo (or something) HAVE produced a messenger that works like trillian (on all messenger services) on smartphone. Enjoy your days of unlocked (certify free) smartphones they wont be around for long!
