Headset Profile

My SPV has locked itself in HEADSET profile mode and Orange tell me that its a fatal error and are replacing the handset.

Has this happened before?

Is there anything I can do to avoid this happening again?

Nope - it's a well known bug with the phone. Presumably it's a hardware fault.

Someone mentioned that it is probably caused by pressure on the headphone jack causing the "jack detection" part of the socket to be pushed together, thereby making the phone *think* that there is a jack in the socket. Quite a few people who've had this problem had been using 2.5->3.5mm jack adaptors (IIRC).

It's happened to me. I hadn't been using a 2.5->3.5m jack, just the normal headset. Orange agreed to send me a replacement handset, which they have done.

Couple of things to bear in mind. New handset does not come with ALL-Explorer, so you have to go to handango and redownload it, if you had already purchased it. Same for other apps you may have installed.

Also (and more annoyingly) the replacement handset they gave me had not had the software upgrade, so I had to go through the hassle of upgrading again.

Otherwise, Orange CS were very helpful. From reports on this website, and also anecdotally from what the Orange CS person said, this headset problem is occurring sufficiently frequently for it to be flagged as a common problem.

Sorry, I wasn't particularly clear - what I was meaning was that the 2.5->3.5 mm jack adaptor extends the protrusion of the plug from the side of the phone, thereby making it a better lever to knacker the socket!

There is Orange emergency care:

if you lose your phone or it breaks and you don't have insurance

Call 07973 100 150 to notify Orange. You will be presented with the two options below:

1. Emergency Care - costs just £30 inc VAT plus a subscription to Orange Care for a minimum of 12 months. You'll receive a replacement phone and be covered for loss, theft and damage to your phone. If you already have Orange Care, you're unable to get Emergency Care. See terms.

2. Emergency Replacement - For just £70 inc VAT, you'll receive a replacement phone only. Insurance is not included in this charge.

To find out how you can protect your phone from theft, click here.

I have heard from cases (not spv but other brandnew phones) that this

service cost them more (150 or so) cause orange said they had a

smartphone and not a phone...

BACK TO THE INITIAL TOPIC OF THIS THREAD:

Yes, I had the same problem, but got a replacement, which is 100% OK!

Don't think you need to have Orange Care to get the replacement. No mention was made of it when I got my replacement.

The headset problem is a known fault, and should be covered by the phone's warranty, as opposed to requiring insurance.

Sorry, I misread the post above and thought the person was just generally

asking what happened if something happened to his phone without care.

Didn't realise he was actually referring to the main issue (headset problem)

of this thread.

The headset problem comes in two forms - the hardware fault which can be temporarily fixed by pushing down hard on the top of the headphone socket's metal surround with a fingernail (but better to get a replacement SPV!) or there is also a software fault. Some people have reported that if you change to an orange homescreen you can then reset the profile to normal, and then go back to whatever homescreen you were using previously.

Having that now... Yep, ushing and blowing in the socket v hard solves it temporarily, but then it may accidentally go into headset mode again and you won't hear any calls or reminders (vibrate only i guess)... Phoned 150 today and they offered me a replacement (I'm on O Care), but they can only arrange delivery within 24h of the call. So I'l be calling them on Friday since I'm unable to collect it within next coupla days...

I've been having this problem recently then today, It got stuck completly in Headset mode...missed about 4 calls whilst trying to sort it out..tried over and over again sticking things in the hole and wiggling them about but couldn't get the G-spot, rebooted a few times and still in headset mode. Then I put the headphones in again, went to Media Player and played something, stopped it, went back to home and removed the headset and it flicked back to Normal. I seem to remember the same course of events fixing it when I was on holiday too, may be worth a try if you're getting this problem.
