Guest Bacon Posted January 2, 2003 Report Posted January 2, 2003 I've had my SPV for about a week. Since I received it its spent most of its time on standby (as I'm waiting for a number port, hence not using it yet). However I have noticed a poor battery life - I get 24 hours or less in standby ( I don't know what the talktime is like yet). Is this good/bad should I be whinging and trying to get a new battery ? Please post your typical battery life time here so I can see a comparison. Many thanks.
Guest rebecca_south Posted January 2, 2003 Report Posted January 2, 2003 There is a certen layout (full i think) that really extends ya battery life and speeds the phone up... mine lasts about 36-48 hours standby... but 20 if im making calls ect
Guest garf_d Posted January 2, 2003 Report Posted January 2, 2003 However I have noticed a poor battery life - I get 24 hours or less in standby ( I don't know what the talktime is like yet). Seems about right for me, although mine does spend around 2 hours a day playing MP3s (at full volume) because my job involves a lot of travelling round London. I would agree that in comparison to my 6210 the battery life is crap, probably only needed to charge that twice a week. However my t68i with the MP3 addon would not last a second day with my usage patterns and so effectively needed charging just as often as the SPV. I think it all depends on what you use as a comparison benchmark though. Compared to most mobile phones the battery life is crap, no argument. But in comparison to PDAs (say my iPAQ 3660 which the SPV has pretty much taken over from) the battery life is about the same. I would expect to have to dock/charge the iPAQ every day if I had been using it for more than a couple of hours that day, if I were to disable the auto power off and leave it sitting there I doubt it would last anywhere near as long as the SPV. I think the only fair comparison would be with something like the XDA which is also both PDA and GSM phone - anyone out there got both and like to share your observations? Gareth
Guest garf_d Posted January 2, 2003 Report Posted January 2, 2003 There is a certen layout (full i think) that really extends ya battery life and speeds the phone up I've noticed the speed thing too rebecca. You can speed up most versions of Windows by getting rid of the desktop backdrop - why should the Smartphone be any different :D Gareth
Guest Gadgetman Posted January 2, 2003 Report Posted January 2, 2003 I've yet to get anywhere near 24 hours. It comes off the charger at 8am and I generally get a low battery warning by 11pm same day. I don't use it that much during the day, but it does live in my trouser pocket and I wonder how many times the screen light gets turned on accidentally due to the poor, IMHO, case design.
Guest pauld Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 I'm on my second phone now. I complained to Orange about the battery life of my first phone which was only about 24 hours, rubbish in this day and age for advancing technology (I don't care how much it can do, it should stay alive for at least a couple of days). Anyway, they were quite good and sent a replacement next day on New Year's Eve. Wonderful I thought. New phone, try again. Same problem of course. Again, I complained. Solution Orange this time suggested, turning the phone off during the night and charging it while turned "off" for the duration of the night. Well, I tried it (charging for approx. 8 hours while off) and 9 hours later I'm still on four battery bars (about 85% power). It seams to work. Since owning either of the phones, it never occured to me to charge the battery on it's own once without the phone being on. Because the phones come with well charged batteries for some reason, most people may not bother to turn the phone off while charging. This apparantly does not charge the battery properly. (don't ask me why). Anyway, TRY IT and let us know if it worked for you. :D :( I'm happier knowing that my SPV has a longer life.
Guest benny Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 Usually between 12 and 18 hours. I unplug it from the charger at about 7am, and the warning usually appears by 10pm. I've found that using the screensaver extends life up to about a day and a half, but does tend to cause the phone to crash. B
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 I get 24 hours at a push. Normal I unplug it in the morning about 7am and put it onto charge between 10 and 11pm and by then it'll normally have dropped to 1 bar on the phone. I've tried last night leaving it powered off while charging so will see if that has a positive impact.
Guest Sunk Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 I now seem to be getter better and better battery life, I even had a whole weekend, with a couple of calls and SMS messages, but I haven’t been using the GPRS so much recently!!!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 i usually use about half the battery, unplugging at about 9am and then plugging back in at about 7pm. this is with the screensaver on but "using" the phone for about 1/2 the time its not charging, few sms's and 30 min email checks. no calls though...
Guest Shire29 Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 On pure standby with no usage at all it could go 48hrs before i get a warning, just. However it always gets some usage, browsing and/or Media player so I end up having to charge daily. Love to show off the phone too, although I won't be doing so much of that now. Cheers, Shire
Guest studiosonic Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 49 hours since last charge, and just under half full. Oh yeah!!! Been on standby most of the time - no calls, and about 6 texts, and a quick look on the net to check a footy score. That's normal usage for me so it's great that I can get a few days out of it without a charge.
Guest Spanky Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 49 hours..! My God, you don't happen to live in a cryogenic chamber where life moves that slow it's almost stopped do you? I get about 18 hours normally, and I'm one of those who switches it off and leaves it in the cradle overnight.
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 same with mine, i _have_ to charge mine every night. i just read in another post though that one person found their battery life double after setting the home screen timeout to "never". i've turned this on now and i guess we'll see how it gets on tomoro...
