Am I the only one out there who has still using their original 8mb SD card?

I know I really should buy a 128mb jobbie, but a mixture of laziness and skintness means I am still struggling with 6.5mb.

It's meant that I have become quite creative however in squeezing stuff on, I've managed 10 mp3's and the Prodigy's smack my bitch up video on there :D

I still only have 8Mb. Only got some pictures and stuff on there...

I did just look at www.ebuyer.com and they had a dodgy brand 128Mb SD card for £36 so I'm gonna pull fingure and get one of them.

Then I can put some movies on it...

Can you use MMC cards in the SD slot, i notice they are lots cheaper than SD cards?

In my looking around recently the price difference between MMC and SD seems to be fairly small.

For instance a 128Mb SD for £41ish, and a 128Mb MMC for £51ish (same brand)

the SPV should work with MMC and SD and I've heard it alleged that it should be compatible with up to 1Gb cards when they become available.

Waiting for a 512 might take a while and cost. Currently 256Mb cards seem to be in the range of £100-£150 and 512Mbs - well there's a toshiba at $186 and then a couple of other brands at about £300.

That's on www.ebuyer.com I've also found reasonable prices on www.dabs.com (especially the dabsvalue brand which could be any brand when it arrives)

Looking through the other posts on this topic I found that there is a guy on eBay selling 128mb SanDisk SD cards for approx £33 plus shipping.

Just ordered one - should be here soon !

His eBay id is 'topdot7' I think :-)

Now all I want is one of those SanDisk Cruzer units - can't seem to buy one seperately at all :-(

According to the M$ guy on the Smartphone newsgroup, the SPV can support any size SD card you throw at it.

I only have the 8mb still because I can't decide whether to get 128 or 256, i'd prefer 256 but my wallet would prefer the 128.

Playing movies in an SPV, is like watching a slideshow of pictures (dont bother telling me about the encoding settings i've looked its performance both in the M$ show and the 1 i created using the advises on this forum).

So no point in going for 256MB, my advise is if u can really afford it buy a 128MB SD card, i myself is using a 64MB. And just pay the 10 quid more to buy the SD instead of MMC cos SD is supposed to be 4 times faster.

we'll I encoded a music video using the recommended settings in the other thread and it does run smoothly for me bar the occasional stutter every 30 seconds or so (something i can put up with as it is only a phone after all). I wouldn't even think about watching movies on it tho until the backlight problem has been fixed, and there is a way of 'bookmarking' a space so i can continue from the same point on my next train/bus journey.

Good news for you, the backlight problem is supposed to be fixed in the update which is hopefully gonna be with us mid janurary. As for book marks have a search of the forum for stuff talking about ASX files. These can be used as playlists but also by specifying the entries right you can make playlist entries that start part way through the file there by creating marks that you can skip to in the film.

I personally find that the video performance of these phones is pretty acceptable... sure it's not as good as my laptop playing divx but then I don't pull my laptop out on the tube...

But we don't want to be messing about with power management everytime we want to watch a vid clip. This is a problem with media player not power management

and even when setting it to on permanently, it still seems to turn itself off after about 2 minutes

I originally got a SPV when first released and the backlight used to stay on when the power management setting were changed to "never"time-out backlight. Last week orange replaced it due to a strange fault (text message was stuck in outbox like a virus and could not be sent). With the new handset the backlight DOES NOT stay on even when the settings have been altered.

So the answer to everyones question is on some handsets there is no backlight problem :D while on others there IS a problem.

For music I find that wma format is best. I use a program called MP3 to WMA I have set the files to 16K. Average size of track after this is about 400 - 500K. Quality isn't particularly brilliant but its good enough if your on the move I suppose it depends on how fussy you are. As for video, there is a sticky on the customisation forum about video settings by Qrious and a really good post by Ray on the optimum settings for video on SPV's. The software I use is Windows Media encoder 9 (free from Microsoft).

As a rough idea of sizes the Matrix Lobby shoot scene is about 2mb and the prodigy video about 3mb.
