Guest zenabi Posted January 3, 2003 Report Posted January 3, 2003 Has there ever been anything available to download through the Orange Update program here in the UK? I just ran it now out of curiosity and it seemed to have downloaded a ringtone automatically (I didnt choose to get it), but I can't find any new ringtones or anything... Anyone know what this "update" was?
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 3, 2003 Report Posted January 3, 2003 I haven't seen anything on this for the UK ever. Don't know what the ringtone thing your talking about is... just checked mine again and got the normal "your device is up to date" message. I did have a look at the Swiss update and that came up with a list of things like : Software progs (1) Ringtones (5) anything else useful (0) And then you could go into the list and pick the specific things you wanted... so I imagine if they ever put something up on the UK one it'll look very similar.
Guest phoenix Posted January 3, 2003 Report Posted January 3, 2003 i got the ringtones too but no idea where they are
Guest kernowmagic Posted January 4, 2003 Report Posted January 4, 2003 The ringtones are stored in my documents/mysounds
Guest zenabi Posted January 4, 2003 Report Posted January 4, 2003 The ringtones are stored in my documents/mysounds Nope nothing new in either of the mysounds folders (IPSM and Storage)
Guest Thurstan Posted January 4, 2003 Report Posted January 4, 2003 yep mine did this too... perhaps orange were updating an existing ringtone? it happens very quickly, almost in a blink of the eye, when updating. Then it says you phone is up to date, blah blah
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 5, 2003 Report Posted January 5, 2003 I've never been able to download anything from the UK locale, only German (Switzerland), which let me download the Orange Messenger, the Emblaze Player, and some ringtones. It looks like Action Engine have changed the way that the location is determined now, because changing locale doesn't enable the ROM update? P
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 5, 2003 Report Posted January 5, 2003 Mine downloaded 3k and 4k the other day but I have no idea what for? as all it said after was that I was up to date?
Guest Treadsoftly Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Any more news about when this update is about to occur? I don't know about anyone else, but my SPV has been 'freezing' a lot more over the last week, and I'm getting v. frustrated by it. If the GPRS charging hits me in this next bill (I'll know by the end of the week), I'll be seriously considering getting rid of the thing unless performance improves considerably. Hence, my seeking news about the Update. On a totally unrelated topic: it snowed in London and it has settled!
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 Mine downloaded 3k and 4k the other day but I have no idea what for? as all it said after was that I was up to date? Yeah, I'm pretty sure the download 3K etc is just getting the catalogue of updates, it pulls down a little XML file that is what the list of available updates is stored in.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 That must be it as it did it again today :D wishfull thinking
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 i'm interested as to how they are going to noticably improve battery life with a software update (as per rumours from Orange Denmark) :D
Guest rcraswell Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 There are a number of things that can be done to improve battery life. Because of the way the hardware and OS work, the phone uses less power when it's doing less work. If you can decrease the activity level of background tasks, you can increase battery life. --ron
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 And reduce the number of times it appears to 'freeze' when you are doing stuff! Most annoying P PS I bet Ron knows when the update is due :D
Guest rcraswell Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 I'm just a little cog in the big wheel... :D
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 heheh. out of interest is this an ms patch or an orange developed one? or both? :D
Guest DJHope Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 The only improvements of the swiss update ive herd are possible battery life and better signal bars anyone care to add? this sounds pants, i could be wrong!
Guest Monolithix [MVP] Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 better battery would be the best improvement you can get imo as its shite. stronger reception would be nice too, i dont get more than 2 bars... :/
Guest Deemon Posted January 7, 2003 Report Posted January 7, 2003 I have just this minute got off the the phone with Jane on 156 who tells me that there is no specific timeframe for the update however shes aware that there are issues with the phone..... :?
Guest tdp Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 Hello all. I have changed the locale to German (Switzerland), and tried the update, but my phone returns the message that I'm upto date. Am I doing something wrong, as I have not managed to download the additional applications that are available from this region. Any help would be great. Thanx.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 8, 2003 Report Posted January 8, 2003 I think the locale detection has been changed now :D P
Guest crck Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 hello together i bought the spv on 27th of december.... and i'm not so "amused" with it... the short life of the battery, no options available (like dockstation, carcharger).... about the swiss rom-updated: the update was surely for the unlock/change sim issue to use it on other networks. the batterylife wasn't loger after it..... yesterday, 15.30 full charge, tried for 15min to connect with my laptop over ir, the two short calls ( 2-3 min) and 1 sms, 1 photo, and this mornig: no ALARM!!!!! the spv was dead..... i use a nokia 9210, and the normal case is 1 week........ where is the difference? crck there is no patch for "stupidity"....
Guest DJHope Posted January 9, 2003 Report Posted January 9, 2003 Jokes, battery isnt an issue for me i had been using a non-standard crippled battery for my old SL45 for over 5months, hardly any calls and a couple of texts, standby max of a day and than that used to die, if i can cope with that i can cope with anything, SPV is easierly better! My biggest issue now is probably hang-ups and definately certification although mine hasnt hung up for AGES, i always worry it will! Also it seems you swiss guys didnt get a full update, cause the danes seem to have a better one.
Guest awarner [MVP] Posted January 10, 2003 Report Posted January 10, 2003 hello together i bought the spv on 27th of december.... and i'm not so "amused" with it... the short life of the battery, no options available (like dockstation, carcharger).... about the swiss rom-updated: the update was surely for the unlock/change sim issue to use it on other networks. the batterylife wasn't loger after it..... yesterday, 15.30 full charge, tried for 15min to connect with my laptop over ir, the two short calls ( 2-3 min) and 1 sms, 1 photo, and this mornig: no ALARM!!!!! the spv was dead..... i use a nokia 9210, and the normal case is 1 week........ where is the difference? crck there is no patch for "stupidity".... The initial swiss update was more of a trial by Orange just to see how it works(my guess) but wait for the proper UK update then hopefully these issues will be delt with. You say no alarm are you using the calendar or the proper alarm? I've had no problems so far touch wood. Comparing a 9210 with a SPV come-on Different sizeweight, what are the battery specs with the nokia? and yes I do like the 9210i. Did you get the IR to work? if not try between your two phones, I managed to first go download wavs from a 9210i and my SPV.
