Manual Network Selection

While on holiday in France, I tried to use Manual Network Selection to stay on Orange F.

Whatever I selected, it switched between all the French networks!

Another bug?

Did you tell orange you wanted to use it in France?

I tried it with my old phone last year got all the networks but could not get out just some automated recording in French (funny enough) as I do not speak very good French I was at a loss.

My phone worked fine, it just switched between the networks when I told it not to!

I'm going to Moscow soon and the cost of text messages varies greatly between the networks, I hope this is sorted by then!! I did think it was odd that setting the network selection to manual did nothing, but I presumed it was because I was still in the UK.

Manual Selection basically means if you can't get you home service it'll offer you all available services and let you choose which one (if any) you want to use. Automatic will pick one - not sure if it uses some logic (cheapest/strongest signal) or if it picks at random.

Using Manual in the UK won't have much effect unless you can get O2 for example, but not Orange (unlikely since most operators have similar availability in the UK). Then it'll give you the option of O2, but picking it won't work (UK operators can't roam with each other).

I'm originally from the north coast of Northern Ireland where there is very bad reception and you often get switched over to the Irish networks coming from Donegal. When I was home for Christmas I set network selection to manual. Otherwise I often flick over to Eircell or Digiphone and make expensive calls without realising it. I also get a "Welcome to Digiphone" text 3-4 times a day if I leave it on automatic.

It worked most of the time but, like Paul, occasionally put me on an Irish network without offering me the choice. I don't know if that's cause it was the only one available and therefore there was no point in letting me choose. My old Nokia still offered me the choice (so I didn't have to roam if I didn't want to). So it may not be a bug, it may be the SPV may just be trying to be helpful... or it could be a bug

I had the same problem as Paul elsewhere. I set the phone to select manually, and chose a network, but every so-often it would switch to the other one. The problem was for some reason, I couldn't receive text messages on that network.
