Does GPRS internet work with Pay As You Go?

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help me. I was led to believe by a PAYG support person that GPRS was available on the PAYG tariffs and you were able to use if for WAP and internet. My sim was upgraded to enable WAP, MMS and GPRS and as far as I can tell this has been done successfully. My other half was due to upgrade her contract, so I managed to persuade her to go for an SVP (she was happy to keep her old phone and let me borrow the new SPV - for test purposes of course!)

The big day arrived yesterday and I tried my sim and lo-and-behold, no GPRS internet. I get the 'G' box, but IE tries to dial and then gives up after a couple of minutes.

I contacted wireless services on 451 and the lady was very helpful. She emailed me some PAYG settings for the SPV and these were recieved and I now have in my data connections an 'Orange GPRS PAYG'. I have tried this and it still isn't happy.

Tried to contact 451 again and this time got a very stern reply saying that the SPV is a contract only phone and although GPRS is available on the PAYG, they (at PAYG) are not able to send settings for that phone as it is not available as a PAYG.

I am obviously aware that this is the case, but am a bit annoyed that on the previous occasions (getting my sim upgraded and getting the new PAYG settings) I was told most definately that GRPS internet was available with PAYG on phones such as the SPV (the guy even told me approximately how much it would be per webpage).

Is there anything I can get, either WAP or GPRS using my PAYG connection or am I on to a total loser here.

I realise that most people will recommend that I should get a contract especially with the £6 unlimited access, but I'm more that happy with my PAYG so it's a bit of a shame that orange are being restrictive about this.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer,

Jamie.

If you have a pay as you go phone that you registered before 16 December 2002 just call 451 to activate GPRS. If you registered your pay as you go phone after this date you can activate GPRS by selecting GPRS on your WAP menu. this is from the link on the topic about bundles. was yours registered after the 16th?

The sim was registered before 16th December and has (from what Orange cutomer support tell me) been enabled for MMS, WAP and GPRS.

I do get the 'G' symbol on the SPV, but as mentioned, when it tries to connect it states 'DIALING', alternates between the small 'G' and the aerial symbol and then after a couple of minutes returns the the large aeriel.

Could it be that I have not configured the settings properly? I assumed that the new data connection they sent for PAYG was correct, but maybe not?

Thanks anyway,

Jamie.
