Guest pauldy Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Hi, wondering if anyone could help me with a small problem I've got myself into. I was fiddling around with the ActiveSync on the SPV and brought up the directory of the phone in Windows Explorer. I shifted some of the shortcuts on the start menu to organise them a bit better and now three of the icons at the top of my home screen have turned into question marks with no link behind them and a fourth one, the one on the far right, shows a picture but the link doesn't work. I don't know how I'm supposed to get things back to how they were. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 If the list of icons at the top is the most recently used bar then... (To confirm it's the MRU when you go an run an app does it add the icon for the app to the front of the icon list?) What seems to be the case for the MRU is that the icons actually link to the start menu item for the app that you've run. If you go and run a series of apps their icons will get added to the MRU properly and will work correctly from then on. The only time you will be hit by this again is when you reboot the phone. The list of items currently on the MRU is reset if you power the phone off and when it comes back on it will have the default 5 items on the bar (might be less if you use large icons?). The problem is that these default 5 are pointed at the location on the start menu that the 5 programs were on the phone at build time. So you're stuck. At the end of the day you just need to grin and bear it and following a reboot you'll need to go through the program menu the first few times but after that the apps you actually use will ave added themselves to the MRU and you'll be laughing. A pain but that's the way life goes...
Guest pauldy Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 OK, thanks, yeah you're right - icons do appear if I run programs but after turning off the phone they disappear. Is there any way I can get the phone back to how it was when i bought it, ie get the shortcuts on the programs menu back to where they should be?
Guest spacemonkey Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Well, you could do a hard reset, but that seems a bit extreme for this situation Otherwise you just need to put the shortcuts (for those 5 items) back in the startmenu where they were originally... You could ask someone who hasn't mucked about with their phone where they are, I don't know, cos I moved mine... There's probably also some piece of XML on the phone... maybe in the /windows directory that points at these so you could try and find that.
Guest pauldy Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Ok cheers, it's back to how it should be now. :D
Guest HelloDave Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Thought I'd found a quick fix for this, but it doesn't work perfectly! The five icons displayed by the MRU plugin on startup are - 1. Inbox 2. Contacts 3. Calendar 4. Internet Explorer 5. Solitaire I've got the first 3 in the root of my start menu, where the MRU plugin expects to find them, but I moved IE and solitaire. My idea was to copy the IE and solitaire shortcuts back to IPSMWindowsStart Menu and set them as hidden via All Explorer so they don't clutter up the start menu but the MRU could still find them. I've tried it and IE now shows up in the MRU but not solitaire, yet they're both there with identical attributes. Strange!
Guest Shuflie Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 solitare should be in the games folder of the startmenu.
Guest HelloDave Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Doh! So the workaround does work then...
