[Edited by Site Admin, thanks for the submission Saracen!]

SYMPTOM:

If you select a network manually while roaming, the phone will still switch to other networks.

RESOLUTION:

None known.

I took the phone with me to Israel (No GPRS btw, even though they have an Orange network, and one of the highest mobile phone densities in the world) and the whole roaming-part of the phone, incl. auto vs. manual, finding a network at all, settings, it all seems very beta, and unless I'd keep turning my phone off and on again, I'd constantly find myself without cover and as mentioned, even though it is on manual, it kept swiching between Orange and Cellcom (the other Israeli GSM provider. Comes up on the screen as 5 random digits and not 'Cellcom' as it should...).

They have quite a bit of work to do there.

are the 5 random charaters possibly because they use an irsreli (sp) character set?

I think the 5 characters are the network identifier, actually a 5-digit number. I know that when I visited Egypt the networks were 60201 (MobiNiL) and 60202 (Vodafone Egypt).

I think Saracen is on to something. I personally though first it was because of the different character sets, but my friend who was visiting from LA with his Nokia (the new one with the big colour screen but not the camera-phone), on T-Mobile, he got 'Cellcom' in his display, so I don't know, most probably it's Oranage's fault, and not the phone.

But the SPV is still no good on roaming, all the time, my friend on Nokia/T-Mobile would have full coverage, and I would be with either No Service or Searching...

As far as I understand, those network number to name translations are on the phone hardware itself. Hence older phoes usually still give numbers of newer networks.
