Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 I used 21MB in December, 16MB of it was free, but the other 5 MB has been charged at £8 per MB. I AM NOT A HAPPY BUNNY! P
Guest Shuflie Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Was it all on the same phone number? Or perhaps it was something to do with you getting your SPV unlocked. Another quick thought, did you use GPRS in france?
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 All on the same number, and NOT the SPV that I got unlocked. I've spoken to Orange, and they confirmed it, they said 'you should think yourself lucky you were not charged after 10MB'. Grrrrrrrrrrr.... P (VERY angry!)
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 What I think REALLY takes the piss is that I am charged this, yet they provide no facility for me to check how much of my GPRS allowance I have used without purchasing an additional piece of software. 10MB is nowhere near an 'unlimited' GPRS plan, and I fully intend to take this further. Without a truly unlimited, or at least reasonably unlimited GPRS plan, the SPV is a waste of time in my opinion. I live with it's quirks because of the 'internet based' functionality if offers, but my patience is being tried atm. P
Guest Shuflie Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 That's nasty, and possibly illegal if you read their t&c's for the SPV promotional pack. You should only have got a warning or at worst been kicked off the GPRS promotion and denied access.
Guest RMWD Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Has anyone challenged orange about this yet? It would be intetresting to see if they can uphold their hidden terms and conditions and yet aggresively market the SPV as an unlimited trial. I think they are being shortsighted as the only way these phones are going to achieve critical mass is if data is cheap. The killer app is the internet access. Make it cheap or at least reasonably prices and people would use it all the time and in preference to their own PC. Make it expensive and it's just another pretty phone. Please Orange price the data sensibly and everyone will want one.
Guest Will Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 hmm just rung 156 (out of possible big bill scareyness!) learnt some stuff that might help in your battle. When was gprs unlimited activated? if it appeared on your bill before Dec then that's cool! 156 or billing Have NO way to see your usage, until a bill is produced, however it is monitored and if you go over the limit someone should call you Or a text message is sent to your phone  . according to 156 the unlimited package is for your first 10mb, and you can merrily continue use of gprs after 10mb. I was assured that someone would contact me if I exceeded the AUP, but they would NOT guarantee that they would leave an answerphone message. or that they would call back if there was no answer. OR they might send a text message (which on my phone seem to have a very low arrival speed). So basically we're at the mercy of 1 phonecall or text. before we get a huge bill. Something is not correct. Will (speaking to oftel tomorrow) (i have the name and team number of the lady who gave me this info if required, PM me for it if you need it.)
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Thanks for the info guys, i'll phone O again tomorrow, and challenge them :D P
Guest barncourt Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Hmmm... I think Orange could be had here under the Trade Descriptions Act.... If they advertise a service as "unlimited", even if you abuse it, you shouldn't be charged for it - warning plus disconnection at best. A lot of internet ISPs used to advertise similar services for so called "free" internet access. Now most of them advertise it as "anytime", i.e. not unlimited use. If Orange levy this charge to my account in January, I shall take great delight in pointing this out to them. I think Oftel might have something to say about it too.
Guest NXNM Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Its time we made a stand We need a number to call, of one orange support team, we should ALL arrange to call up on a particular day and demand that GPRS is both better organised and supplied at more reasonable rates. Personally im not really prepared to pay anymore than £6 per month, if they dont do enough to alow me MSN and emails for that per month its pretty useless. So heres what i propose, we set a date, and all call up and flood a particular team with complaints, and keep doing this until we see positive action from Orange. We, the paying customers run the company, if they wont accommodate us GPRS will go the way of BT Cellnet and WAP
Guest crimminsky Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 I agree, I can't believe they have done this.....I too would not have bought this phone if it were to cost me a small fortune just to browse the net etc, I can do that at work for free :D
Guest wideawake Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Paul, I have also read terms and conditions. It says 10 meg per day maximum, to not exceed 50 meg in a month (you fall into that criteria) As one of the previous posts says if they feel you have abused the fair usage policy they should give you a warning. Plead ignorance. even though they say that the "Unlimited Package" is compulsary I double checked mine to see that it had amended. It had not they had kept me on the 0.5meg package I was already on. I do not know if you had GPRS previously, but double check to see if that has happened to you. I am trying to find the link in Orange so I can post the t&c, but as I am using the SPV as a modem my connection is slow!!
Guest wideawake Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Here it is, link to terms and conditions:- http://www.orange.co.uk/talkplans/gprs/terms.html Its right at the bottom.
Guest Will Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Well Paul, I can see the conversation you're gunna have with orange tomorrow: P: you've charged me for GPRS. O: Yes, you exceeded the unlimited transfer quota. P: How much data have I used so far? O: We don't know till the bill is printed. P: So I might have already done this again this month? O: You would be contacted. P: You mean like last month? O: Yes P: but no one contacted me last month. O: Oh! P: do you know of any websites where I can get info on my SPV from? O: there are several. P: like Modaco.com? O: Yes that's a popular one. P: That's mine/my companies. O: Let me pass you to a supervisor. Os: Mr X? P: yes. P: modaco.com is visited by XXXXpeople a day. with XXXX members, all of whom use the SPV, or are considering purchasing. O: Oh. P: Could you give me a statement so i can post it on there, for all of your other customers to view. The rest we won't know till tomorrow.
Guest wideawake Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Errrr, before everyone complains. That was the terms and conditions for GPRS roaming (that finished in August!) Well just shows how confusing it is! :D
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Hehe, i'll let you know how I get on! :D P
Guest NXNM Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Granted that many users of this forum are from outside of the UK, but Paul, could you possibly send out a mailing to all members of the BB with details of the best place to contact at orange. If all users would take the time to complain orange will have to change.
Guest Paul [MVP] Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 I'll see how I get on tomorrow. I think we may need so save our real tantrum for when the 'unlimited' (good joke) runs out! If I don't have any luck tomorrow, mentioning 'Watchdog' seems to work quite often! :D P
Guest Will Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Well to add to the pressure, ask them to take full notes, and add them to your account, or request the conversation is recorded, and request a copy of the conversation. Will
Guest NXNM Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 I have a business accociate that knows somone very high up in Orange UK, ill try and get some contact information from them.
Guest wideawake Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Paul - If its any consolation I was working to the 50 meg in a month. So I am well and truly @@!!***. So think I might have slightly exceeded 10 meg!!!!! since 17 December. Oh well biggest phone bill previous to this was £230 in one month. IRC to blame for that! Donations welcome.... second hand SPV for sale..... PC....... House......
Guest Accurate Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Paul, Did you use GPRS while you were in France? If so I wonder if this makes any difference?
Guest davidhorn Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Oh dear. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. I think my GPRS usage for December is likely to be around 40-60MB. I only just got the phone... and the first two weeks were spent showing off streaming music and video. Can't wait for my bill. I might use Will's idea. Between my two sites, I hit 10 million visitors per month.
Guest ajb3000 Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 Now you've got my sh!t scared about my bill, it's due on the 10th and i've been using GPRS a fair bit (I refuse to pay for software that is included in every other GPRS phone I know of, espiecally while GPRS is supposedly free). A phone call to Orange is definately in order.
Guest Roamer Posted January 6, 2003 Report Posted January 6, 2003 OMG !!!! This is mad, and yup, Oftel came down heavy on everyone that offered 'unlimited' internet access then cut it on them or barred them. Hmmmmmmm has anyone actually tried talking to Orange about this? I did try to download and install the gprs traffic counter thing, but I gave up because of the trial reg stuff (It just kept requesting the code again and again :D ) I wish I'd stuck with it now, it might turn out to be a really bad decision :(
